First off, I am baaaaaack! It’s been a crazy second half of the year but will be more consistent going forward and figured with the upcoming holiday, figured its time to talk health as we hit a reset going into Christmas and New Years.

Activate a healthier you this holiday season by making choices that will support your New Year’s goals! I don’t know about you; however, I want to make it through the holidays without gaining weight.  I love a good party and I love going out “on the town”! So, what are the key factors to maintaining a healthy and steady weight through the biggest party season of the year?

Holiday survival tips!

1.) Know and honor your body:

Why do we think we are invincible in November and December? If you already know that your body does not tolerate certain foods, this fact will remain true during the holidays!  It cracks me up how so many of us avoid unhealthy food choices all year long, only to throw caution to the wind during the holidays and then wonder how and why we feel sluggish, tired, and packed on pounds. Do yourself a favor and eat some fruit and veggies. Cucumbers, carrots, and zucchini slices are a great substitution for chips and crackers when enjoying your favorite dips. Strawberries, kiwi, bananas, pineapple, and pears can be incorporated into your favorite appetizers and desserts. Have fun with it!

2.) Awareness:

Be mindful and deliberate about your recipe choices. I realized that I was making cookies that my kids did not enjoy anymore, so guess who was the only one eating them??? Me! If you are making special treats for your loved ones, make sure they want it in the house this year, you may be surprised that their palates have changed with their goals and lifestyles as they evolve. Your body will thank you later if you make conscious decisions and intentional planning.

3.) Cocktails and Libations:

Be mindful of the mixers you use in your holiday cocktails. Where there is a will there is a way, try to seek out lower calorie drinks. I know I would much rather eat my calories than drink them. Drinking a glass of water between each cocktail has been known to help control overindulgence of alcohol which can lower your threshold for healthy decision making and increased snacking resulting in higher caloric intake.

4.) Sharing is Caring:

Are you willing to split that sandwich or dessert? Sometimes we want to taste fun new recipes at this time of year. Is there a way to enjoy and watch our portion control at the same time? Of course, there is! I know you will figure it out. It is a lot easier to keep the weight off than to have to lose it after the fact. Keep in mind that at the next event there will be more treats and snacks to choose from. So, pace yourself!

4.) Hydrate:

Did you know that dehydration presents itself as hunger? Even though the weather is cold your body still requires ample hydration to feel satiated. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day can help ward off those extra pounds by feeling less hungry therefore you may be less likely to overindulge in empty calories.

Brannan Island5.) Take a Walk:

Throw on a coat and take a walk! Get some fresh air whether it be before work, on your lunch break or after dinner, you will not be sorry about taking a walk. Not only will you get some natural vitamin D, but you will also be able to enjoy improved concentration and lower stress levels, who does not need that during the holidays?

I hope you make it through the holidays with the same waistline you went in with, I will be rooting for you!
