Antioch City Council Set to Talk Salary Increase, Assistants and Cannabis

by CC News
Antioch City Council

On Tuesday, the Antioch City Council is set to discuss a salary increase which would take their monthly stipend of $1,600.04 to $1,852.25.

Per State Law, although it does not allow for automatic future increase, the council can vote to increase by 5% for each calendar year. In Antioch’s case, the increase would not take effect until after the next municipal election.

The $1,852.25 would be effective January 1, 2025 and would be a $252.21 per month increase—or $3,026.52 annually.  The council will vote to either take no increase, increase to an amount less than $1,852.25 or increase the full amount.

Pursuant to Ordinance No. 2171-C-S adopted on September 10, 2019, the salaries for the Antioch City Council Members were last increased to $1,600.04 per month effective January 1, 2021

Council Seeks to approve Part-Time Secretary Positions.

For the third time, the item to approve part-time secretary positions for the city council members returns to the agenda. The positions will provide administrative support to the city councilmembers. This includes clerical support and providing information to the public and city staff. They will also assist in planning, coordination and preparation and delivery of city council events.

The fiscal impact will range for allocating one-part time secretary is $15,000 to $21,667, for two part-time secretaries is $30,000 to $43,334 and for three part-time secretaries is $45,000 to $65,000.

Note – the way this is set up for the Antioch Council to vote, it has created three resolutions so should councilmembers vote this down in District 2 and District 3 who have been against this, or should the three-councilmember voting block not want to give District 2 and 3 a secretary, they would not get one.

  • Resolution A – for part-time secretary for District 2 and 3 Council Members
  • Resolution B – For part-time secretary for District 1 and 4 Council Members
  • Resolution C – part-time secretary for the Mayor.

Back in April, both Mike Barbanica and Lori Ogorchock voted against the item. Meanwhile, Mayor Lamar Thorpe and councilmembers Monica Wilson and Tamisha Torres-Walker voted in favor.

Thorpe said he was absolutely for this due to the demands and their demands have changed while they are more proactive and not a reactive council. Said they could bring this back when they talk about the budget.

Ogorchock voted “absolutely no”.

UNHOUSED RESIDENT SERVICES – AMENDMENT NO. 4 TO CONSULTING SERVICES AGREEMENT WITH FOCUS STRATEGIES

This is comical. With everything wrong with Antioch the council is focused on themselves first and foremost. Council raises and council assistants. Twilight zone people.

Even more discouraging is the fact that they seem to think that “cannabis businesses” (more plainly put, pot dealers) should be the future of Antioch. With “cannabis businesses” – legal or not – comes more crime.

There is no proof. Statements like this need facts, and in this case there are none.

There are facts. All you have to do is observe. Even so-called legal cannabis businesses attract burglary, theft and robbery. It’s already happened in Antioch a number of times.

It’s the only type of business in town that will survive and is fluid with cash. Prime business that that give cash to politicians and float other businesses to launder money. Just my opinion.

It at least feels like the City Of Antioch is self-serving and abusive when it comes to spending our tax $’s! Whether true or not, perception is everything.
