What is k911 and who/where does it serve?

K911 Animal Rescue is a foster-based animal rescue helping cats and dogs of all ages. We assist shelters and the community primarily throughout Contra Costa, Alameda County and San Joaquin County but also assist as far down as Central and Southern California.

Why should someone adopt a rescue pet?

Adopting a rescue animal saves lives! By adopting a rescue, you are giving an animal a home that would otherwise be living on the streets and at risk for sickness/death, or euthanized at overcrowded shelters. Getting a “free” animal from someone is never free- the costs of sterilizing an animal alone is a minimum of $300 for cats and $500 for dogs, which often deters new pet owners from providing the appropriate vet care. This can lead to unwanted behaviors, pregnancies, or cancers.

By adopting an animal from K911 and other rescues, each animal is fixed, vaccinated, flea treated, dewormed and microchipped at a fraction of the price it would cost for that “free” animal- all done prior to being adopted.

Explain home based foster vs. shelters:

Home-based fostering allows each animal to be assessed for both health and behavior by experienced fosters. Fosters are able to provide better behavior and personality descriptions to potential adopters to ensure they find the best home for them based on their needs. While shelters are an extremely valuable asset to the stray animal population, the animals are not assessed in a home-environment and may not be matched with the best home for their individual needs.

What are some of the challenges for an animal rescue?

Funding is always a huge challenge, as we rely 100% on donations and grants. We try to have multiple fundraisers throughout the year to raise money in order to continue the rescue mission, which covers vet costs for sterilization, vaccines, and health care. Our fundraisers include Tats4Cats Tattoo Event, calendars, t-shirt campaigns, candy fundraisers, vendor fairs, paint nights, and garage sales.

Did Covid have any effect on rescues?

COVID continues to bring challenges to the rescue community. Veterinarians continued to cut back available spay/neuter appointments to rescues citing lack of available medical supplies while their costs for procedures increased. Some vets have stopped working with rescues all together. This has caused us to have to re-evaluate and even reduce our intake as we struggle to pay the increased fees.

We have refrained from passing the cost of care onto the adopters, as we are competing with government funded entities like the shelters who can offer adoptions at a fraction of what it costs rescues. However, this has meant increased debt as the costs of basic spay/neuter has increased and the adoption fees we charge are not able to cover the cost of what we put into each pet adopted out.

We got a double whammy to start 2023 coming out of the holidays and now a huge storm!

Explain the impact this time of year compounded with a storm has on rescues?

While the springtime is the known kitten-season, those in rescue know it never truly stops and is actually year-round. Extreme temperatures, whether it is extreme heat or extreme cold, presents an added urgency to an already overwhelming need for rescue. The storms have added this element of urgency as more citizens are finding cats, kittens and dogs approaching them for help and shelter from the heavy rains and frigid temperatures. We have been getting an increased number of emergency requests to find safety for these animals.
