Jan 9-12: Richmond Police Calls

The Richmond Police Department provided an overview of significant activity between January 9-12 in the city of Richmond. Officers responded to 847 calls for service during this period.

Richmond Police Assist Student With Mental Health Crisis

On January 12, Richmond Police officers along with the Richmond Fire Department responded to an area school for a student suffering from a mental health crisis. The student gained access to the roof of a school building and was threatening to jump. Officer Tagorda, who is a former department Crisis Negotiation Team member, quickly arrived on the scene and established a connection with the student. With the assistance of school administrators and the RFD, Officer Tagorda was able to persuade the student to safely climb down to receive the mental health assistance they needed.

Thanks to everyone on scene for helping deescalate the situation and bring it to a safe resolution. Due to their good work, a youth is safe tonight and receiving the help that they need.

OPERATIONAL STAFFING SHORTAGE – FORCED OVERTIME

During this reporting period, a total of nineteen (19) officers, four (4) sergeants, and one (1) lieutenant reported for forced and/or mandatory overtime shifts to meet minimum staffing requirements.

01/09/23 – BATTERY

Officers responded to the 1000 blk of 23rd St for reports of a fight. While en route, witnesses reported that the suspect was armed with a knife and leaving the area. Officers saturated the area and were able to locate the suspect. Officers attempted to peacefully stop the suspect, but he refused to comply. After a brief struggle, officers were able to take the suspect into custody. The suspect was booked into the RPD jail. #225

01/09/23 – POSSESSION OF A STOLEN VEHICLE

Officers responded to the 7th St and Pennsylvania Ave area after the victim located their stolen vehicle driving in the area. Officers located the vehicle and conducted an enforcement stop on it. The vehicle stopped, and the driver was taken into custody without incident. #226

01/10/23 – ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING, VIOLATION OF A RESTRAINING ORDER

Officers responded to the 3200 block of Pierce St for reports of a male forcing a female into a vehicle. Officers responded and located the vehicle as it was preparing to drive out of the parking lot. Officers stopped the vehicle and contacted the occupants. Officers determined the driver, who was restrained from being near the victim, forced the victim into the vehicle and tried to drive off with them. Witnesses confirmed that the victim tried to escape but was physically restrained and forced into the vehicle. Officers were able to rescue the victim and provide them with resources. DSVU detectives responded and assumed the investigation. The suspect was booked into the RPD jail. #237

01/10/23 – ARMED ROBBERY

Officers responded to the 800 block of 23rd St for reports of an armed robbery. The suspects fled in a vehicle. Video of the incident showed the suspects wearing distinctive clothing and a description of their vehicle. Officers saturated the area and located the suspects’ vehicle near 7th St and Market Ave. Officers stopped the vehicle and detained the suspects without incident. Officers were able to identify the suspect’s clothing matched the video of the incident. The adult and three juvenile suspects were taken into custody and booked into the RPD jail and Juvenile Hall. #257

01/11/23 – EVADING POLICE, WARRANT ARREST

Officers responded to the 100 block of Bissell Way for reports of a vehicle playing loud music. Officers arrived on the scene and located the vehicle. Officers recognized the vehicle from a call the previous day, where the driver had brandished a firearm. A record check of the vehicle’s license plate showed that it was wanted for being used in an armed robbery.

When officers attempted to contact the occupant of the vehicle, he drove off. A vehicle pursuit was initiated that spanned approx. 2 miles throughout the city. The driver was taken into custody without incident when he stopped the vehicle and attempted to run off on foot. The driver was arrested for his attempted evasion and, ultimately, a robbery that occurred in a neighboring jurisdiction. #270

01/12/23 – ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON

Officers responded to the 4000 block of Taft Ave for reports of a vehicle purposely striking a pedestrian. Officers responded and located the suspect and victim, who lives on the same street and have a history of violent confrontations. Officers determined that the suspect purposely drove her vehicle at the victim, striking her and causing a leg injury. The suspect’s vehicle became disabled in the front yard of a residence after the collision. The victim was treated for her injuries, and the suspect was booked at the RPD jail. #305
