Press Release

Reps. Mike Thompson (CA-04) and John Garamendi (CA-08) presented a check for $2,546,600 to the City of Martinez for the Municipal Fishing Pier Renovation. This funding was secured in the Fiscal Year 2023 government funding bill.

“The Martinez Fishing Pier is one of the few locations in California that does not require a fishing permit, providing our community with year-round free fishing opportunities,” said Thompson. “The pier has deteriorated in recent years, causing safety concerns about the longevity of the pier. The funding secured for this project will extend the life of the pier for at least 30 years, enhance the opportunities available to the public, and stimulate the local economy. I was proud to work with local leaders to identify this need, and I look forward to seeing the impact this funding has on our community.”

“The Martinez Fishing Pier provides a vital stimulus to the local economy and is a cherished recreation area that is enjoyed by many. Ensuring it is in good working order and safe to use year-round is something I will always work to support through my work in Congress. That’s why I was pleased to work with Rep. Thompson to secure this new federal funding to address safety concerns and extend the pier’s lifespan,” Garamendi said.

“Receipt of this earmark for the fishing pier is a very important first step for the revitalization of the Martinez waterfront.  As a popular regional amenity that gets thousands of visitors a year, there is no doubt that this support from Congressmen Thompson and Garamendi is appreciated by all Martinez residents,” said Martinez Mayor Brianne Zorn.

The fishing pier and surrounding area is a popular regional recreation area utilized by thousands each year. Safety is a major concern and the needed renovations and repairs at the Fishing Pier will improve and enhance the public’s recreational uses of the area and is projected to extend the useful life of the fishing pier for at least the next 30 years. Without this funding, the Fishing Pier will continue to deteriorate and need to be closed to the public due to safety concerns.
