Storms Cause $43.9 Million in Damages in Contra Costa County

Contra Costa County confirmed Friday that the series of storms that hit California has caused an estimated $43.9 million in damages. They have also broken down by jurisdiction where the damages have occurred

In mid-January, when Contra Costa County declared its local emergency, damages were estimated at roughly $27 million , but as assessments were made and after further investigation occurred, the damages increased to $43.9 million and could still increase higher.

Across the county, several areas were hit with flooding, road damage, sinkholes, eroded creek banks, mudslides, toppled trees, and power issues.

According to county data, the Contra Costa Water District sustained the most in damages at $7.1 million. The City of Pittsburg had an estimated $9.5 million in damages while the City of Martinez had $5.9 million. Meanwhile, the City of Antioch an estimated $4.4 million in damages with the Town of Danville at $2.3 million.

The emergency status enables the County to be eligible for disaster relief funding, should it be authorized by the federal and state government in the future. The proclamation was sent to Gov. Gavin Newsom and the State of California Office of Emergency Services and Contra Costa County was ultimately added to the Governor’s statewide proclamation on January 11. The Governor issued the statewide emergency proclamation on January 4. This allows the state to make further requests for federal disaster assistance on the county’s behalf.

“We are waiting for FEMA’s official determination on whether Contra Costa County qualifies for Public Assistance, which provides supplemental grants so government organizations can cover costs to restore public infrastructure. Once jurisdictions begin the application process, real damage numbers and costs of repair will become apparent,” said Kristi Jourdan, spokesperson for Contra Costa County.

It’s important to note that Contra Costa County was approved separately for Individual Aid, which provides assistance to individuals and households who have sustained losses as a direct result of a disaster that receives a federal disaster declaration.
