Contra Costa County Historical Society Executive Director has stepped down and the organization is now looking for a new director.

In a statement released Friday:

“After much personal reflection and several discussions with my family, I have decided to step down as Executive Director of the Contra Costa County Historical Society. This was not an easy decision, but I believe it’s in best interest of my family. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the CCCHS and look forward to working with my successor and ensuring they are up to speed and ready to take on the challenges and opportunities this position provides.  All my best,” — Mike McCarron

The Contra Costa County Historical Society seeks a part-time Executive Director who will be the spokesperson for the Society and whose work includes both “inside” and “outside” tasks.

The Society values an Executive Director that is:

  • Energetic, outgoing, and self-motivated
  • Enthusiastic about local history and able to excite others about the Society’s work
  • Excellent at communicating both orally and in writing
  • Experienced in working with non-profit organizations and boards of directors, preferably at a management level
  • Able to recruit, train and manage volunteers
  • Knowledgeable about archival and museum practices
  • Has a good working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office
  • Familiar with (or willing to acquire) a good working knowledge of digital archiving and PastPerfect Museum Software

 The Executive Director also:

  • Works to increase the Society’s membership
  • Oversees the Society’s website and interacts with the media
  • Helps develop and attend Society events and community events on behalf of the Society

The Society’s work is growing. It intends to scale up its operations to handle multiple new accessions from around the county as well as update a complex archival database to expand online accessibility to the general public. The Executive Director must be able to plan the growth of the physical facilities, the acquisition of new spaces, and the archiving of new collections and online databases.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, preferably in museum studies or a related field.

The Executive Director works three days per week (Tuesday-Thursday 9am – 4pm) plus one Saturday a month (10am – 2pm). Annual compensation range is $28K-$32K depending on experience. Benefits include paid vacation and sick time plus a dedicated parking spot.

Of note: healthcare benefits are not included. The new Executive Director will start work in June 2023.
