Discovery Bay Old River Bridge

San Joaquin County – Caltrans will perform a 55-hour full highway closure for the safety of workers and motorists as work continues on a bridge preventative maintenance and rehabilitation project that will make necessary upgrades and repairs of the Old River Bridge on State Route 4 (SR-4), located at the San Joaquin/Contra Costa County line, east of Discovery Bay.

This closure is scheduled to begin at 10:00 p.m. on Friday, March 31, through 5:00 a.m. on Monday, April 3, 2023.  The following detour will be required during this closure;

State Route 4 Detour Information:

  • Westbound SR-4 travelers: The detour begins at the Tracy Boulevard intersection; south on Tracy Blvd; west on I-205; north on Mountain House Parkway; northwest on Byron Road to SR-4.
  • Eastbound SR-4 travelers: The detour begins at the Byron Road intersection; southeast on Byron Road; south on Mountain House Parkway; east on I-205; north on Tracy Blvd to SR-4.

Caltrans will utilize flaggers, as well as overhead and portable changeable message signs, alerting motorists of the detour and potential delays which are expected to be approximately 30 minutes.

This project is required to upgrade existing mechanical and electrical components and to implement structural repairs to increase the reliability and serviceability of this 100-year-old swing span bridge.

Work will include repairing or replacing equipment that operates the movable portion of the bridge, replacing the electrical power supply to the bridge by installing a new cable in the river bottom, and adding a new control board and associated equipment to the control house above the traveled way of SR-4 on the bridge structure.

This $10.7 million SB 1-funded project will be performed by California Engineering Contractors, Inc. (Pleasanton, CA) and is scheduled to begin the week of September 19-23, 2022, with completion expected in May 2023 (weather permitting.)
