San Pablo, CA – On June 22, 2023, at 12:22 a.m., a San Pablo Police officer observed a 1997 green Nissan Altima traveling eastbound on San Pablo Dam Road at a high rate of speed.

The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the Nissan, but the driver failed to yield, and a pursuit was initiated. The officer pursued the Nissan to the 4700 block of Appian Way in El Sobrante when the vehicle accelerated to speeds in excess of 90mph.

The officer determined the circumstances unsafe and discontinued the pursuit by deactivating all emergency equipment and returning to San Pablo jurisdiction. The pursuit traveled approximately 0.7 miles and lasted about 30 seconds.

At 12:33 a.m., SPPD officers were notified that the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office had responded to a rollover collision in the 5000 block of Appian Way involving the Nissan, which had just fled. While on the scene, deputies located a deceased male, a 29-year-old Richmond resident lying outside the Nissan. No other occupants were found inside the vehicle or in the immediate area.

The 29-year-old male was confirmed to have multiple outstanding warrants for domestic violence and weapons violations; however, it is not yet clear if he was the driver or passenger of the Nissan.

Per Contra Costa County protocol, San Pablo Police Department is jointly investigating this incident with the District Attorney’s Office and the assistance of the California Highway Patrol and Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office. The roadway will remain closed as investigators process the scene for evidence.

The identity of the involved party is being withheld pending family notifications. This is an active investigation, and anyone with information on this case is encouraged to contact the San Pablo Police Department at 510-215-3150.
