The Fairfield Police Department announced a suspect is in custody after jumping in a golf cart to help track down a burglary suspect while on a golf course.
According to Fairfield police:
On July 13, at around 4:34 pm, Dispatch received a call regarding an unknown man in the backyard of a residence in the 3600 block of Doral Drive. As officers responded, the caller reported that the man was now trying to break into the home.
Two officers, Officer Josh Smith and Sergeant Cesar, anticipating the route the would-be burglar might use to flee, stationed themselves on the Greenbelt Trail where they soon encountered a man matching the suspect’s description.
The man, later identified as 36-year-old Michael Salcedo of Fairfield, spotted the officers as they approached and fled on foot. Officer Smith and Sergeant Cesar gave chase and eventually found themselves running through a local golf course, which is where things got a little…interesting.
Salcedo (likely given swift feet by a desire not to go to jail) gained distance on the officers as they entered the course’s busy driving range. Not wanting to lose him, Sergeant Cesar turned to Officer Smith asking, “Do you know how to drive a golf cart?” as they ran. When an affirmative answer was given, Sergeant Cesar called out to the golfers on the course, asking to borrow a golf cart.
The officers were approached by an unknown golfer, who told them the cart was “Good to go” as he handed it off. Officer Smith jumped behind the wheel and they quickly caught up to and detained Salcedo, who was arrested and booked into County Jail for burglary and violation of parole.
The golf cart was summarily returned to its rightful owner.
Our sincerest thanks to the community member that allowed our officers to “borrow” their golf cart and entrusted them with all the equipment inside of it. Quick thinking by all (and possible fodder for an upcoming Bad Boys movie scene?)!
