On Tuesday, the Brentwood City Council will discuss compensation for its planning commission, parks and recreation, arts, and youth commissioners.
Planning Commissioners have two regularly scheduled meetings per month, and currently receive $200 per month for their service to the City. The current compensation amount was established in January 2001.
The council will discuss the pay increase after the Brentwood Planning Commission voted 3-2 in June to increase its stipend from $200 per month to $400. The item was requested by Chairperson Anita Roberts
“I did my research and noted that the planning commissioners have the hardest job scrutinizing, as we did this evening, materials, some of it monogamous for the city of Brentwood. We do have the final say on what gets built in Brentwood once the council reviews and makes it approval and where” stated Roberts. “Amid a severe housing crisis, commissioners face a lot of angry people and we have a lot of work to do. A planning commissioners workload can sometimes exceed 40-50 hours a week or until the next meeting. Some of these packets have been more than 1,000 pages.”
At the meeting, she defended her request.
“How I am looking at this, I know with the Housing Element, with Bridel Gate, couple of other big projects coming our way, and special meetings included in this ask, I am thinking, perhaps the terminology can be tweaked a bit, $200 every 2-weeks as opposed to $200 every meeting, we can have that discussion, the ask is that we increase the stipend $200,” explained Roberts.
According to the staff report: Both the Planning and Park & Recreation Commission compensation are funded by the General Fund, and any increases to compensation for these Commissioners would be funded by the General Fund.
The current total annual cost of Planning Commission compensation is approximately $12,000, and $6,000 for the Park & Recreation Commission. The Youth Commissioners receive no compensation at this time, so any introduction of a new compensation amount would be paid for from the General Fund.
The Arts Commissioners do not currently receive any compensation. Any introduction of a new compensation amount approved for the Arts Commission could be funded through the Public Art Administration Fund, which is allocated 20% of Public Art fees collected. The Public Art Administration Fund presently has approximately $920,000.

Absolutely not! These commissioners are appointed and they know what they are getting into, or should know. No planning commission should be making $400 a month when compared to other cities. I think you should also include city council pay, Oakley council only makes $456 per month. If Brentwood council approves this pay increase for commissioners, it shows how out of touch they are with government service
Mrs. Roberts, perhaps you should step down then, nobody is forcing you to be on this commission. Antioch pays $0 and you get $200, you’re both already overpaid.
Signed,
Taxpayers
