Contra Costa County Fire responded with assistance from Richmond Fire to the report of a residential structure fire. Truck 70 and Engine 70 (San Pablo) arrived on scene within three minutes. Truck 70 reported smoke and flames from the front (Alpha side) of a duplex with multiple live wires down across Dover Ave. The wires were arcing in the street and along the side of the residence, which prevented the crews from accessing parts of the house.

Richmond Fire Battalion 64 arrived on scene just after crews from station 70 and assumed command of the incident. Engine 70 initiated a fire attack with coordinated ventilation from Truck 70. Richmond Fire Engine 62 provided primary search of the residence. Engine 70 quickly knocked the fire down, which allowed the search crew to find a resident in the back of the house.

The fire attack and search crews worked together to extricate an occupant from the house. The occupant removed from the residence was in cardiac arrest. Crews initiated CPR and Advanced Life Support measures. A CON EMS ambulance arrived on scene. Contra Costa Fire personnel assisted with and provided care for the occupant during transport to the hospital. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, the occupant was pronounced by medical staff at the hospital shortly after arrival.

Crews remained on scene for over three hours to complete overhaul of the residence and to support the Fire Investigators in determining the cause of the fire.

The Red Cross provided four occupants displaced from the two residences by the incident with emergency housing and other support.

The fire was knocked down and contained in approximately 60 minutes from time of arrival.

Crews performed overhaul for an extended period of time to ensure the fire was fully extinguished. A fire watch was ordered due to the hoarding conditions and crews assessing the structure throughout the day to check for any hotspots.

There were no Civilian or Firefighter injuries. Fire Investigators could not determine a cause of the fire due to the conditions. Once cat was found deceased inside the home with one additional cat missing.
