Antioch, CA — Anthony Slaney of Martinez won the 25 lap Xtreme Late Model Series Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. This was the Eighth Annual Larry Damitz Memorial race, paying tribute to the five-time Antioch Speedway champion. Slaney took the lead from reigning series champion Matt Micheli of Live Oak and never looked back on his way to victory.
Auburn’s Ray Trimble started on the outside front row and took the early lead ahead of Micheli and Slaney. Micheli went low in Turn 2 of the fourth lap to grab the lead with Slaney making a similar move a lap later for second. The leaders ran closely with Slaney making a pass in the fourth turn on Lap 9 to grab the lead. At that point, Slaney began to build his advantage over Micheli.
Rod Oliver of Yuba City and Tim Yeager of Belmont had a good battle going for fourth before Oliver got by on Lap 17. Oliver made a Turn 4 pass on Trimble on the 23rd circuit to grab third. However, Slaney had built a half-lap advantage over Micheli by the time the checkered flag waved. Oliver settled for third ahead of Trimble and Jake Dewsbury of Vallejo.
Making only his first Wingless Spec Sprint start, Bryant Bell of Oakley scored the 20 lap Main Event victory. Bell is the reigning champion of the Western Midget Racing Association.
Bell set the fast time of 14.234 and started in the second row of the feature race. Incoming point leader Jacob Tuttle of Oakley set the early pace. A red flag waved after a lap was completed for a three-car tangle that saw two-time champion Shannon Newton of Elk Grove roll. Newton was sidelined along with Jimmy Christian of Morgan Hill.
Bell took the lead from Tuttle on the restart as last starter Blake Bower of Brentwood settled into third. Bower slipped past Tuttle for second on Lap 6. Bell was setting a rapid pace up front, and he lapped fourth place Dylan Newberry of Brentwood during the final five laps. Bell won ahead of Bower, Tuttle, Dylan Newberry and Brentwood’s Bob Newberry.
Ryan Cherezian of Knightsen won the 20 lap Super Stock Main Event. Cherezian had earlier won the eight lap heat race, and he set the early pace ahead of past Petaluma Super Stock champion Randy Miramontez of Santa Rosa. Multi-time champion Jim Freethy of Danville was an early third. A yellow flag waved on Lap 16 with Freethy making a move around Miramontez for second.
Freethy made a challenge on Cherezian, but Cherezian stayed cool under pressure and would bring it home to the satisfying win. Freethy got sideways in the final turn and fell to third behind Miramontez. Paul Hanley of Emerald Hills was fourth ahead of multi-time Petaluma champion Mitch Machado of Rohnert Park.
Tom Brown of Santa Rosa won the 20 lap Mini Stock Main Event. The two-time Antioch champion bolted into the lead at the start ahead of Tony Quinonez of Corning and Mike Cover of Santa Rosa. Brown was setting a rapid pace and was in slower traffic by the 10th circuit. The yellow flag waved at that point for debris on the track. As Brown led the restart, Cover slipped past Quinonez for second.
Reigning champion Tom Davis of Los Molinos and Laina Bales of Antioch had a good battle going for the fourth position. Bales saw her race come to an end as she tangled with Pittsburg’s Don Abitz in Turn 3 on the 16th lap. Brown resumed command on the restart ahead of Cover and Quininez. They finished in that order with Davis and Patrick Kelley of Clovis rounding out the Top 5.
Travis Day of Concord won the 12 lap Dwarf Car Main Event. This was his first Main Event win. Day led from the start and repelled a late race challenge by Brandon Aylesworth of Benicia to score the win. Joe Leduc of Tracy ended up third.
Racing resumes this Saturday night with the IMCA Modifieds, Sport Modifieds and Stock Cars back in action along with the Pacific Coast Hobby Stocks. For further information, go to www.raceantiochspeedway.com.
