At its May 28 meeting, Lafayette Police Chief Ben Alldritt presented its 2023 annual report to the City Council where crime remains low.
According to Alldritt, they are currently staffed with 17 sworn, 5 professional staff and three par-time time parking enforcement.
Data:
- 12,007 calls for service (400 less when compared to the prior year)
- 1,168 police reports
- 302 arrests (in 2022, they had 259)
- 1,022 citations
Part 1 Crime:
- Homicide – 0
- Robbery – 9
- Assault – 4 (*note, felony only)
- Burglary – 60
- Larceny – 170
- Vehicle Theft – 23
- Arson – 2
“Larceny, covers a wide variety of things, theft, shoplifting, bikes, everyone except for theft of a vehicle, this is a category that pumped our number from 277 that went up 20-25 and almost all of this can be attributed to shoplifting cases,” stated Alldritt.
He added that their cases of auto thefts (10851) went down.
He further broke down crimes against a person:
- 2 assaults with deadly weapons
- 9 robberies (5 w/weapons & 4 w/physical violence)
- 1 carjacking
- 1 domestic violence
Alldritt addressed the carjacking stating it occurred back in May.
“Its an anomaly for us, we have had them before, not very often. That was a case that happened back in May when a young lady was walking to her vehicle at 10:30 at night at a grocery store where two juveniles came up pushed her down, pinned her and took her vehicle,
explained Alldritt.

- 2023 – 16 (5 of those cases are closed)

Aldritt also reported that violent crime in Lafayette remains low at 13 reported Part 1 violent crimes for 2023—which equates to 51.2 violent crimes per 100,000 versus 2022 national average of 380.7 and the California average is 494.6 violent crimes per 100.000.
Alldritt also reported that property crime in Lafayette was at 264 for 2023. This equates to 1,040 reported property crimes per 100,000 versus the 2022 national average of 1,954 and California average of 2,314 property crimes per 100,000.
