Martinez to Establish Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Commission

On Wednesday, the Martinez City Council will consider the creation of a new commission dedicated to community initiatives that promote diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

Back on May 15, a study session was held to provide input to the city council and the following scope was presented:

  1. Make policy recommendations to the City Council regarding diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging;
  2. Promote and advance the Sister Cities of Martinez;
  3. Conduct listening sessions and surveys to hear community feedback;
  4. Proactively plan inclusive and welcoming events to celebrate and educate the community on the rich diversity of cultures and experiences of all humans;
  5. Provide feedback on the relevance of City-sponsored cultural events;
  6. Propose relevant proclamations to the City Council; and
  7. Recommend to the City Council the priority for community benefit funding when included in any State, Federal or private grant applications.

According to the staff report, following procedural steps to form the commission, staff will launch an application and selection process to occur September through October with the objective of holding an initial meeting before the end of the year. More information about the application and selection process will be brought forward at the Public Hearing on July 17, 2024.

When seated, the committee will consist of 7 members. Six Commission members shall reside within the corporate limits of the City or be owners or employees of a business located within the City which holds a valid City business license. One Commission member shall be a resident within the Sphere of Influence of the City of Martinez. The city council will also appoint two alternate members. The DEIB Commission will serve without compensation.

Martinez Set to Return to Part-Time Core Team

The Martinez City Council is being asked to authorize the police chief to enter into an agreement for part-time services from Coordinated Outreach Referral and Engagement (CORE).

Although the city had funded a full-time position for homeless outreach services, with monies expiring and no new funding identified, the city will return to a part-time position while partnering with the City of Pleasant Hill.

The cost of the agreement is $140,733. This includes a 4.4% increase in base program costs year over year.
