Antioch City Council Set to Talk Pay Raise

On Tuesday, the Antioch City Council is being asked to provide direction to prepare an ordinance on increasing city council pay. The increase would be to $1,900 per month.

The move comes after Senate Bill 329 was signed into law—a bill that increases compensation that councilmembers of general law cities may receive for their work.  The bill was introduced by Senator Bill Dodd (D-Napa).

Based on the parameters in SB 329, the City of Antioch falls into the category of 75,000 to 150,000 population which allows council pay up to $1,900 per month ($22,800 per year).

Senate Bill 329 also authorizes the salary of council members to be increased beyond the specified maximum to an amount not exceeding the greater of either 5% for each calendar year from the effective date of the last adjustment of the salary or an amount equal to inflation since January 1, 2024, based on the California Consumer Price Index (not to exceed 10% per calendar year).

If approved, the pay increases would take effect for the city council following the November 2024 election.

At its January 13, 2023 meeting, the council discussed a pay increase, however, there was no consensus to support salary increases at this time. Back in 2019, the council voted 4-1 (Ogorchock dissenting) for its first pay increase in 14-years which brought their pay from $941.20 to $1,600.04 per month. It did not take effect until January 1, 2021.

Those buffoons are already over paid. Aren't pay raises usually based off merit and performance?

If they miss a city council meeting they forfeit $600 of their pay. Would cut down on childish theatrical grandstanding.
