Heat Wave, Cooling Centers and PG&E

On Monday, the National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning and red flag warning.

A red flag warning from July 1, 11:00 PM until July 2, 11:00 PM.  Meanwhile, an excessive heat warning is also in effect from July 2, 11:00 AM PDT until July 5, 11:00 PM PDT.

The heat wave will bring 100 degree temperatures Monday to most of Contra Costa County, including a highs of 106 degrees in the City of Brentwood and a potential high of 108 to the Town of Discovery Bay next Wednesday.

UPDATE: The National Weather Service says an Excessive Heat Warning will be in effect from 11:00 am Tuesday until 8:00 pm Saturday with temperatures hitting the upper 90’s to 110 degrees. There will be limited overnight relief with low temperatures in the mid 60s to low 80s.

TIPS TO PREVENT heat-related symptoms:

  • Drink water. Sip all day; do not wait until you are thirsty.
  • Do not leave children or pets in vehicles.
  • Limit physical activity and wear a hat outside, preferably with a wide brim.
  • Keep shades drawn, and blinds closed.
  • Open windows to cooling breezes in the evening.

PG&E Updates on July Fourth Week Heat Wave

PG&E Issues Public Safety Power Shutoff Alert:  A PSPS Watch (shutoffs likely) alert has been issued for several counties for July 2 and July 3.  This is due to high wind and dry conditions. Some parts of the counties may be affected which include:

  • Colusa (July 2-3)
  • Glenn (July 2-3)
  • Lake (July 2)
  • Napa (July 2)
  • Shasta (July 2-3)
  • Solano (July 2)
  • Sonoma (July 2)

Cooling Stations to Open

City of Antioch

The City of Antioch announced that between July 2-8 from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm, they will be opening up three cooling centers. Residents without home air conditioning or with conditions made worse with extreme heat and poor air quality are encouraged to seek out the cooling centers. Due to the excessive heat warning, the City of Antioch is providing cooling centers for your convenience.

City of Brentwood

With extreme heat expected Tuesday, July 2, through Friday, July 5, the City of Brentwood has designated the Brentwood Community Center as a cooling center. The Community Center, located at 35 Oak Street, will be open to those looking to escape the heat from 11:00am-8:00pm.

  • July 2 – 11:00 am to 8:00 pm
  • July 3 – 11:00 am to 8:00 pm
  • July 4 – 11:00 am to 8:00 pm
  • July 5 – 11:00 am to 8:00 pm

City of Concord

Due to anticipated high temperatures over the next several days, the City of Concord will open the Concord Senior Center as a cooling center, where air conditioning and comfortable seating are available. Located at 2727 Parkside Circle, the facility will be open as a cooling center on the following days:

  • Tuesday, July 2, 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Wednesday, July 3, 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Thursday, July 4, 1 p.m.-7 p.m.
  • Friday, July 5, 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Saturday, July 6, 1 p.m.-7 p.m.

People who visit the cooling centers should bring their own snacks, water, and activities. Pets are permitted if they are on-leash and are not aggressive or loud. Owners are responsible for feeding, watering, and taking their pet outside to relieve itself and cleaning up after them.

  • The Meadow Homes Spray Park, 1351 Detroit Ave., is open daily through the summer from noon to 6 p.m.
  • Concord Community Pool, 3501 Cowell Rd., will be open for recreational swimming 1-4 p.m. on weekdays, and 12:30-5 p.m. on weekends and on the July 4 holiday.
  • Residents can also beat the heat in Concord at Sunvalley Shopping Center, Brenden Theatre, Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, and any of the air-conditioned restaurants or retail stores in the area.

City of Oakley

The City of Oakley it will open its city council chambers (3231 Main St) on July 2 and July 3 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm for anyone needing a cool place to chill. Due to the July 2 planning commission meeting, the council chambers will re-open at 6:00 pm on

City offices will be closed on July 4th and 5th. While it’s not an official cooling center, the public is always welcome at the Oakley Library (1050 Neroly Road). Borrow a book set in the Arctic and cool off July 5th and 6th from 10 am to 6 pm.

City of Pittsburg

The City will offer a cooling center at the Marina Community Center (340 Marina Blvd.) Tuesday, July 2nd and Wednesday July 3rd from 4-7pm If you are looking for a fun way to cool off, Buchanan Swim Center (4150 Harbor St.) is open daily from 12pm-5pm and is open weekends from noon to 5 p.m. Call (925) 439-4841 for more information.

City of Richmond

High temperatures expected all week in Richmond and across the Bay Area. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Heat Advisory (yellow area of map) and Extreme Heat Warning (pink area of map) from Tuesday 7/2 until Saturday 7/6. Hottest days will be Tuesday and Wednesday.

Two cooling places will be available in Richmond:

    • Opening from 8am – 5pm
  • Nevin Park Resilience Hub

    • Openign from 11am – 5pm

Spare the Air Issued for July 2

A Spare the Air Alert is in effect Tuesday, July 2, for the San Francisco Bay Area.

Concentrations of ground-level ozone pollution are forecast to be unhealthy. High levels of ozone pollution are harmful to breathe, especially for young children, seniors and those with respiratory and heart conditions. Protect your health by avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day. You can help improve air quality by working remotely, taking transit, walking or biking, and by driving less every day. — Full release

4th of July Events + Fireworks

It is unclear how 4th of July events will be impacted, see events list, but the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and local law enforcement reminds the public that all fireworks are illegal in Contra Costa County- including those that are labeled as “safe and sane.” Fines could reach $1k.  Events Listclick here
