“Shelters are struggling with a variety of challenges right now – some are evacuating pets because of wildfires, tornadoes, or even loss of air conditioning in extreme heat, and others are overcrowded and having to euthanize highly adoptable pets to make space, a tragic situation,” said Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. “BISSELL Pet Foundation’s upcoming Summer National Empty the Shelters event is a crucial opportunity for people to make a real difference in their community through adoption. Every single adoption saves a life and creates space to save another. Please adopt and give a pet a chance it might otherwise not have. If you can’t adopt, fostering saves lives when shelters are full. Deserving pets across the country are counting on all of us.”

Keep your pets safe this 4th of July!

This time of year is notoriously busy for animal shelters across the country, because so many pets become frightened by fireworks and run from their yards and homes.

Accidents can happen even with the best planning, so make sure that your pet’s license tag and/or identification tag has your most current contact information  and is attached to a well-fitted collar. Update your pet’s microchip information if you’ve moved or changed phone numbers since it was implanted (if you have forgotten and did it through us email  antiochanimalservices@gmail.com).

Fix those fences and gates – now!

Your pets will do best locked safely in the house when fireworks begin. Close windows and pull down the blinds to minimize the amount of chaos they can see and hear outside. Turning on the radio or TV and giving pets a special treat or toy to keep them distracted helps as well.  Don’t be tempted to take pets with you to celebrations where crowds can add to their stress. Supervise all night time outdoor time – put your dog on a leash for potty breaks.

We will be closed on Thursday July 4th, but we will open on July 5th for owners connecting with lost pets or people who want to drop off stray animals they have found.

We will waive redemption fees for pets that arrive at the shelter from July 2nd to July 7th. A dog license will be required if expired ($12.50 – $50.00)

All incoming pets are posted on 24petconnect.com, filter by zip 94509 (expand your search to include other shelters). This is updated hourly.
