The Richmond Police Department are investigating a July 4 stabbing that resulted in the 9th homicide of 2024.

According to police, Richmond Police Officers responded at 4:22 pm on July 4th to the 3500 block of El Portal Dr for a report of stabbing. Officers responded and located an adult female suffering from at least one stab wound, who, unfortunately, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Richmond Police Department homicide detectives are currently investigating. No suspect information has been released and no arrests have been made at this time.

In 2023, Richmond had its lowest homicide total on record with 8. Its highest total was 61 homicides in 1991. Since 2020, the City of Richmond has average 19 homicides a year and since 2010, average 18 homicides per year.

Back in January, the City Council touted the work of not only the Richmond Police Department, but its efforts in working with staff, community groups, non-profits, athletic programs and young people as for the drop in homicides.

“The reason we are not presenting it to anyone is because there is a host of organizations, city departments, commissions and committees we want to make sure are recognized,” said Vice Mayor Gayle McLaughlin who shared they would be sending out certificates of appreciation for helping reduce homicides.

Also in January, Mayor Eduardo Martinez called it a community effort.

“This turnaround is a community effort. Its all of us working together and creating a safe space and finding ways to find solutions to how to move forward,” stated Martinez. “I am just speechless as to what a beautiful city as to what Richmond is becoming.”

He also praised the rent stabilization board because creating a safe space environment and creating a safe home environment for families was crucial while also praising “young people” who have come out in big numbers in political, environmental, and on social issues.
