The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District released data from the 2024 July 4 holiday which shows 317 total dispatches to incidents.
According to the District, they took in 1,104 calls answered by dispatch with 92 total fire (exterior) calls, 16 vegetation fires, 13 structure fires and 128 medical calls. They also had 60 other calls along with 8 other fire calls.
2023 vs. 2024 July 4 call data
When compared to 2023, exterior fire and structure fire calls nearly doubled. EMS, vegetation and other calls also increased.
Contra Costa County fire said the morning started with a vegetation fire in Pittsburg on Leland confirmed to have started by fireworks at 10:30 AM. Approximately 10 acres.
In the City of Antioch, a vegetation fire prompts evacuations after a field caught fire in the 2700 block of Deer Valley Road. The fire made its way up a hill towards houses on Lotus Ct. In the City of Martinez, they battled a 3-acre vegetation fire.
Within Contra Costa County, there were at least three known firework related injury calls. One occurred around 8:00 pm in San Pablo for a hand injury from fireworks, while at approximently 10:30 pm, someone in the City of Oakley received a head injury after lighting off fireworks. The next day, one person had a firework explode in their hand in downtown Antioch.
CONFIRE did issue an update on the Kimball Island Fire which first was reported as possibly started by an approved firework show in Antioch, they said the fire was not related upon further investigation.
The next day, drone footage shows an overview of the fire in Antioch prompting evacuations of 6 homes.
