On Tuesday, the Brentwood City Council will discuss turning two of its committees from ad-hoc committees to standing committees.

“I request that we make the two ad-hoc committee meetings of the Age and Disabilities and the DEBI Committees standing committees,” stated Councilwoman Pa’Tanisha Pierson.

Vice Mayor Susannah Meyer seconded the motion stating that conversation was “long overdue”.

The two committees include:

  • Age and Disabilities Friendly Communities Committee: This committee will examine goals and implementation of funding opportunities focused on improving the quality of life and safety for older adults and adults with disabilities.  This Ad-Hoc committee will be dissolved on January 1, 2025.
  • Diversity, Equity, Belonging and Inclusion Committee: This committee will create and develop a racial equity plan, and an anti-racism and anti-hate crime policy.  This Ad-Hoc committee will be dissolved on January 1, 2025.

By moving to a standing committee, it will allow the council and staff to do ongoing work on an issue or multiple issues—it also would operate under the same rules as City Council and commission meetings when it comes to the Brown Act such as agendas being posted, notice to the public, and public being welcome to attend.

Previous Actions:

  • On January 23, 2024, the City Council, by motion, approved the establishment of Age Friendly Communities Ad-Hoc Committee and the Race and Equity Ad-Hoc Committee.
  • On March 26, 2024, the City Council, by motion, renamed the Age Friendly Communities Committee to Age and Disabilities Friendly Communities Committee, and the Racial Equity Committee to Diversity, Equity, Belonging and Inclusion Committee (DEBI).
  • On June 25, 2024, Council Member Pierson requested a future agenda item to make the Age and Disabilities Friendly Communities Committee, and the Diversity, Equity, Belonging and Inclusion Committee, standing committees.
