On Monday, a suspect has been taken into custody after an 8-hour standoff with the Richmond Police Department.

A shelter in place order was issued after a male subject reported to be waving a firearm at passersby was taken into custody today at approximately 3:47 PM in the 500 block of 2nd Street.

This incident followed an almost 8-hour standoff between the subject and officers. Police said no serious injuries were reported. A replica firearm was recovered at the scene.

“I am proud of the meticulous work of our officers who handled this dangerous standoff displaying great restraint, resulting in a peaceful and safe outcome for everyone involved,” stated Chief French. “As part of our post-incident protocols, we will ensure that the individual receives access to mental health resources.”

The situation began earlier on Monday, August 19th, at 7:41 AM, when Richmond Police Dispatch received a report of a subject standing on the porch of a residence in the 500 block of 2nd Street, between Ripley Ave. and Barrett Ave., waving a firearm at passersby. At 8:39 AM, RPD activated the Community Warning System (CWS) to alert residents in the immediate area to remain indoors. Shortly afterward, homes in the vicinity were evacuated.

Richmond Police S.W.A.T. team, crisis negotiators, and K9 unit made several attempts to contact the subject as he entered and exited the residence multiple times, waiving the firearm towards officers. Police drone coverage captured these images of the subject brandishing the firearm.

Police thanked the members of the public who showed concern for this individual’s dangerous behavior and did the right thing by immediately contacting the police.
