Antioch, CA — Randy Shafer of Vacaville won the 20 lap the Late Model Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. Shafer executed a last turn pass on Ray Trimble of Auburn to grab the lead, and Trimble ended up spinning. The win paid Shafer $800 aboard the Vaca Valley Excavating & Trucking sponsored car.

Rod Oliver of Yuba City picked up the eight lap heat race win and had a front row Main Event start, but Matt Davis of Marysville charged into the lead at the green flag ahead of Oliver and Trimble. Davis spun in Turn 4 for a Lap 4 yellow flag. Oliver led Trimble and Paul Guglielmoni of Vacaville on the restart. A low pass in Turn 4 of the seventh circuit gained Trimble the lead from Oliver, and Shafer made a Turn 4 pass to claim second on Lap 10.

For the next several laps, Shafer kept trying to get underneath Trimble, but he had a push. It seemed like he sorted out his push in the final few circuits, and he made a strong inside move entering Turn 3 on the last lap. Shafer took the lead from Trimble, and Trimble spun. Shafer went on to win ahead of Oliver, Davis, Guglielmoni and Buddy Kniss of Oakley.

Jacob Tuttle of Oakley won the 20 lap Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event. Tuttle had a good battle with title contender Bob Newberry of Brentwood before making the pass to claim his third feature win of the season aboard the Ted Finkenbinder owned entry. The win keeps Tuttle in the point lead heading into September.

Newberry charged into the lead at the start ahead of Tuttle. Two-time champion Shannon Newton of Elk Grove moved into third on the second circuit. The lead duo began to pull away from the pack. Tuttle was looking for a way around the Newberry before going outside down the back stretch on the 11th circuit to take over.

As they were in heavy traffic on Lap 14, a yellow flag waved for Ryon Siverling of Concord in Turn 1. Tuttle led Newberry and Newton on the restart, and they finished in that order with Chris Geilfuss of Antioch and Steve Maionchi of Sonora rounding out the Top 5.

Colten Haney of Brentwood won the 20 lap Pacific Coast Hobby Stock Main Event. This was a special event that was added at the last minute. The money race was worth $750 to Haney, and it was his very first win. He also picked up an eight lap heat race win earlier in the evening.

Haney had a front row start for the feature race and bolted into the lead ahead of Jake Archibald of Oakley. Archibald was giving Haney all kinds of pressure before a yellow flag waved on Lap 7 for debris. Haney continued to lead Archibald and Jared Baugh of Pittsburg on the restart. Archibald was pressuring Haney hard, but the young charger kept his cool to maintain the lead. Archibald lost a wheel for a Lap 12 yellow flag.

Haney led Baugh and Aidan Ponciano of Oakley on the restart. They ran that way until Ponciano slipped past Baugh for second on Lap 18. However, Ponciano was unable to make the move on Haney, who brought it home to a crowd pleasing win. Baugh settled for third ahead of Lance Hurst of Madera and Angela Brown of Antioch.

Tom Brown of Santa Rosa won the 15 lap Mini Stock Main Event. He also won the eight lap heat race earlier in the evening, and this was his third feature win as he increased his lead over Tom Davis of Los Molinos in the championship battle.

Brown and Davis shared the front row for the feature, and Davis took the early lead ahead of Brown. A low move in Turn 1 of the fourth lap put Brown into the lead. Davis had problems lapping Antioch’s Jackie Price in Turn 2 on Lap 5, resulting in contact between the two. The yellow flag waved, and both drivers were eliminated.

Brown resumed command on the restart ahead of Merced point leader Chris Corder of Modesto and Tony Quinonez of Corning. The rest of the race went without incident, and Brown won ahead of Corder, Quinonez, Daniel Bond of Oakdale and Matt Wirth of Oakland.

David Michael Rosa of Antioch won the 20 lap Dwarf Car Main Event. This was the first win of the season for the 2023 championship runner up, and it came after a spirited duel with his father, David Rosa of Antioch.

After winning the eight lap eight race, David Rosa set his sights on his second win of the season as he charged into lead ahead of Brandon Aylesworth of Benicia. David Michael Rosa made a Turn 2 pass on Aylesworth for second on Lap 2. The father and son began to pull away from the pack as Aylesworth had his hands full with Sean Catucci of Brentwood.

By the 10th circuit, the leaders caught slower traffic, and they split a slower car on the back straightaway with David Rosa still leading his son. The elder Rosa had the lead until he began to overheat on Lap 16. David Michael Rosa made a Turn 3 pass to grab the lead and led the remaining circuits for the victory. David Rosa settled for second ahead of Catucci, point leader Travis Day of Concord and Aylesworth.

Mike Gillard of Atwater won the 15 lap Hardtop Main Event. This was his first Antioch win of the season. Gillard currently leads the Sportsman point race at Merced Speedway and won the Jerry Cecil Memorial race last Saturday night.

Gillard shared the front row with point leader Joel Hannagan of San Jose. The opening lap saw a bit of contact, but Gillard raced ahead to complete the lap. Gillard began to pull away from Hannagan with Don Slaney of Martinez running in third. The race ran without further incident, and Gillard had a comfortable lead over Hannagan at the checkered flag. Slaney ended up third ahead of Joe Shenefield of Roseville and Ken Clifford of Placerville.

Ryan Dotson of Fremont won the 15 lap Micro Sprint Main Event. This was his first win of the season and it came after he picked up the win in the eight lap heat race.

The heat win put Dotson on the front row for the Main Event and he bolted into the lead at the green flag. Reigning champion Don McLeister of Stockton quickly settled into second ahead of point leader Ken Carter of Santa Rosa. By the halfway point of the race,

McLeister was taking looks to the inside of Dotson, but he couldn’t get the bite to make the move. With heavy pressure from McLeister, Dotson kept his cool and brought it home to a satisfying win. Carter settled for third ahead of Devon Zuffa of Tracy and Gavin Gonzalez of Santa Rosa.

The track will be dark on Labor Day Weekend, but the Malicious Monster Truck Insanity Tour comes to town on September 6th and 7th. On the 13th and 14th, it’s two nights of racing as part of Hall of Fame Weekend.
