The California Highway Patrol reports it made 1,400 arrests with 1,100 being DUI related during the Labor Day weekend maximum enforcement period.
CHP released statewide statistics:
- Nearly 1,400 arrests, with over 1,100 being DUI-related
- Nearly 28,000 citations issued, including over 16,000 for excessive speed
- Close to 500 citations for drivers exceeding 100 miles per hour
- Nearly 900 seatbelt violations cited
- Over 1,700 distracted driving citations issued
“Everyone’s safety is our top priority, so make responsible choices. Drive sober, stay focused and help keep our roads safe for all who use them,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “Your decisions behind the wheel can save lives – yours and others.”
The Labor Day Weekend maximum enforcement period began Friday, August 30 at 6:00 pm and ran through 11:59 pm on Monday, September 2.
According to AAA, this year’s record-breaking summer travel season is closing out with surging demand for Alaska cruises, European cities, and tourist attractions, according to AAA booking data. Port cities like Seattle, Anchorage, and Juneau saw cruise bookings rise by as much as 30% compared with 2023. All three cities rank among this year’s most popular domestic destinations for Labor Day along with other cities like San Francisco and Las Vegas.
Overall domestic travel over Labor Day weekend is up 9 percent compared to last year, while the cost to travel domestically is down 2 percent. Aside from Seattle, top Labor Day destinations within the U.S. include Orlando, New York, Boston, Las Vegas and Denver.
According to CHP, during last year’s Labor Day MEP, 38 people were killed in crashes throughout the state. Of note, nearly half of the vehicle occupants who were killed in a crash within CHP jurisdiction were not wearing a seat belt. In addition, CHP officers statewide made 1,064 arrests for driving under the influence during the 78-hour holiday enforcement period.
