STOCKTON – Representative Josh Harder (CA-9) introduced the Gas Prices Relief Act, to lower gas prices for families. The bill would temporarily suspend the 18.4 cent federal gas tax. Rep. Harder has also called for suspending the California state gas tax, which was increased in July and costs drivers 59.6 cents for every gallon of gas. The average price for a gallon of gasoline in California is $4.65, while the national average is only $3.34.
“Our families are paying some of the highest gas prices in the country, and it’s incredibly frustrating to see the government make it worse,” said Rep. Harder. “Enough is enough. My bill will suspend the gas tax and let hard-working families keep more money in their pockets.”
The Gas Prices Relief Act will lower gas prices by:
- Suspending the 18.4 cents per gallon federal gas tax
- Passing tax savings to Americans and not oil and gas companies by requiring the Secretary of the Treasury to monitor the program in order to ensure oil and gas companies pass along the savings at the pump to consumers. The bill also encourages the Secretary to take appropriate enforcement actions to ensure consumers see the savings.
- Maintaining the integrity of the Highway Trust Fund by requiring the Department of the Treasury to make general fund transfers to keep the Highway Trust Fund solvent.

What he’s trying hard not to say is that his proposal would make up the loss of federal gas tax revenue to the Highway Trust Fund by making “general fund transfers.” In other words, he proposes to borrow the lost tax revenue and thus increase the public debt.
Amazing what democrats will do in an election year. Could it be they are terrified of not getting votes after their woke new green deal anti fossil fuel entrenchment has caused misery to so many households?
