Mayor Thorpe says this senseless violence is because there’s no jobs…? Actually the main predictor of this violence is fatherlessness. It’s a cultural thing. Plenty of kids are born into poverty, but if they have a father around they’re less likely to do these things. No guidance, discipline, or wealth from their fathers. Bums raising bums. Most of the women you see making excuses at city council meetings are single mothers themselves. Single mothers raising young men without father figures. Men without mental and emotional health will lash out with anger first, rather than communication or creative expression. 2pac said the same thing. It’s sad how this message is lost today because of political correctness.

Thoughtfully put. In fact, Malcolm X said much the same thing but the trend has not only persisted but accelerated.

What broad and simplistic statements you make here. I know many young men that grew up without a “father figure” in their lives, and they are very WELL adjusted — have families, have good jobs, etc.

In fact, you would be surprised at how many police officers were raised by single mothers, with a father nowhere to be found.

So for one to paint a broad picture that ALL fatherless kids will turn out to be criminals is wrong. I have had contact (as a cop) with many families with a father and mother, and some of them are living in “Dysfunction Junction”.

No one said “all” as you claim. But lack of proper parenting is indisputably a significant factor in youth misbehavior and the absence of fathers is a major part of that.

Funny how you are quick to blame this recent cycle of violence as being a “cultural thing”. Which culture are you referring to?

And it is rich that one thinks that not having a father around is the cause of this violence in our society, and that single mothers are incapable of raising their children.

Let me break a secret to you my friend, there are many police officers that were raised by single moms, with no father in the picture, some of those officers have gone on to become Chiefs of Police, and the majority of those officers had long successful careers otherwise (not everyone can be Chief). Your opinion is a simplistic response to a complex problem.

In my time as a police officer, I have had the unfortunate (part of the job) to respond to bad incidents where a father and mother were present, but the situation was basically “dysfunction junction”.

So put your “racist dog whistle” back in your little pocket, and do some research, perhaps you find out it is NOT a “cultural thing”, and you will find out that many single moms are fully capable of raising good kids.

Boomba- it’s completely obvious that single mothers are capable of raising upstanding young men, but every single mother will tell you having a father figure in the home makes it so much easier. Having a man raise a boy to be a man is something that every culture since the dawn of mankind knows the benefit of. No one mentioned race except you. I’ve known 5 young dudes who’ve been killed from Antioch, not one from a racist or a police officer, but from someone who looks like them or someone they’d kick it with. That racist “dog whistle” rhetoric is lame, let’s keep a buck, if you’re really from the culture you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Mohammad X,

Fair enough. You do bring some good points to this discussion. I’m not gonna sit here and “double down” on my comments.

We have better things to do.

Have a good one !
