Martinez, CA – The Contra Costa County Public Works Department (Public Works) received $3.6 million in grant funding from the California Energy Commission (CEC) to install 178 electric vehicle (EV) chargers at 14 County-maintained facilities. These chargers are intended to support the County’s growing zero-emission fleet, neighboring jurisdictions’ fleets, and the public.

Public Works collaborated with multiple County departments, local governments, and key community-based organizations to plan the location of the EV chargers. The chargers will be strategically deployed throughout the county, including both urban and rural locations, with a particular focus on impacted communities.

The County aims to balance fleet charging needs with public accessibility through managed charging solutions, subscription services, and public-private partnerships. A competitive solicitation will be used to select third-party partners to procure, own, operate, and maintain best-in-class Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) to support the goals of this grant.

“The California Energy Commission’s grant will launch a countywide EV charging network that will enable the County to reach its ambitious climate action goal of transitioning our fleet to zero-emission by 2035 and supports EV adoption across the County,” said Warren Lai, County Public Works Director.

This CEC grant builds upon the County’s “EV 4 All” program, funded by the Federal Department of Transportation, in which EV chargers are being deployed at 15 equitably distributed County library sites located within 14 different cities, towns, and census-designated places.

The County’s grant is one of 12 awarded to California local governments, totaling $49 million from the state’s Clean Transportation Program.
