Pittsburg Police Paint Rosy Picture that Crime is Down

On Monday, the Pittsburg Police Department provided a crime update on crime statistics to the city council.

Captain Galer provided the crime data noting they were at 49,577 calls which is a 3% reduction vs. 2023 YTD.  They are also at 5,506 cases which is a -0.8% reduction.  They have also seen a 4% reduction in arrests compared to 2023 with 1,001.

Galer shared the city has issued 2,397 citations which is a 6% decrease year-to-date with top violations include:

  1. Unsafe Speed
  2. Fail to Stop at Limit Line
  3. Vehicle on Highway (unregistered)
  4. Carpool Lane or obey posted signs
  5. Cell phone Text or improper right turn

In 187 traffic solutions in 2024 year-to-date, the city has had 4 fatal crashes along with 100 traffic injuries. The factors include:

  • 33% – all other
  • 21% – DUI
  • 21% – Unsafe Speed
  • 16% – Improper Turning
  • 9% – Traffic signals and signs

Violent Crime Rate per 1K

  • 2020 – 5.26
  • 2021 – 4.67
  • 2022 – 4,99
  • 2023 – 4.70

Galer noted that based on their trend line, violent crime is trending down over the past 4-years. As of 2022, violent crime includes murder, non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, sodomy, sexual assault with an object, robbery and aggravated assault.

Galer said property crimes were trending down since 2020 which include burglary, larceny, arson and motor vehicle theft.

“I will point out in 2024, year-to-date we are down significantly at 109,” said Galer who credited the substation at Century Plaza opening up making a difference along with employees assigned to the business districts. They also have held multiple operations targeting the crime rings targeting the area. “We anticipate the rest of 2024 being on the sharp dissent.”

Editors Note – Pittsburg Target to Closed in October 2023 which has reduced the number of shoplifting incidents.

No other information was provided in the presentation. The City Council did not ask any questions of the police department regarding crime, sideshows, mutual aid, or homicides. The council also was not provided data on motor vehicle thefts which between January 1 – September 28 are at 447 vehicle thefts according to their weekly call logs

Underreporting of Crime – given Prop 47 and the District Attorney stance on crime, its unclear how much under reporting of crime is occurring in the city of Pittsburg. While other cities admit to this, Pittsburg did not touch the item nor did the council even ask the question.


Pittsburg City Council Takes No Action on Prop 36

Allows felony charges for possessing certain drugs and for thefts under $950, if defendant has two prior drug or theft convictions. On Monday, although the council shared their personal views on Prop 36, as a council, it took no action to either support, oppose or take no proposition.

Pittsburg has been masters of deception and manipulation of crime statistics for years.

Agree on crime statistics being manipulated. Crime is under-reported or not reported also due to lack of availability of police.
