UPDATE – Oakley police Released the following statement Sunday afternoon

DRIVER OF A STOLEN VEHICLE TRIES TO ELUDE CAPTURE AND HAS A HEAD ON COLLISION WITH AN OAKLEY POLICE SERGEANT

Oakley, CA – On October 12, 2024, at approximately 6:10PM Oakley police officers were in the area of East Cypress Road looking for a stolen vehicle that was known to be in the area. The stolen vehicle was spotted by officers travelling at a high rate of speed on Jersey Island Road heading towards East Cypress Road. One of our officers feared the driver of the stolen vehicle posed a threat to the general public due to the exhibited driving behaviors so spike strips were deployed. Spike strips are a tool used by law-enforcement to stop, or slow down, fleeing vehicles. (The spikes can be thought of as hollow needles that deflate tires at a measured rate which is typically safer for all concerned.) The spikes were effective and more than one of the suspect vehicle tires were spiked.

In spite of being spiked, the driver of the stolen vehicle attempted to flee westbound on East Cypress as fast as his deflating tires would allow him to go; at least one Oakley officer pursued the driver after the spikes had been deployed. There was moderate traffic on East Cypress Road at that time of day. An Oakley police sergeant and another Oakley police officer were staged at East Cypress Road and Knightsen Avenue, where the Valero gas station is. As the suspect was heading towards the intersection of East Cypress Road and Knightsen Avenue, our sergeant observed the driver of the stolen vehicle was driving erratically. Our sergeant also knew there were quite a few patrons at the gas station and he was concerned for their safety. Our sergeant positioned his vehicle between the gas station and the fleeing stolen vehicle with his overhead emergency lights flashing and his siren blaring. The driver of the stolen vehicle and our sergeant had a head-on collision just prior to the gas station. The air bags of our sergeant’s vehicle activated and the crumpling of the front end of his patrol vehicle kept him momentarily trapped inside. He was soon able to free himself and he took part in the apprehension of the driver of the stolen car who is identified as Devon Singleton (29, Antioch).

Singleton had a female passenger in the stolen car with him. Singleton was life flighted from the scene due to injuries he received, but he was released a few hours later and

booked into jail for: assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer, possession of a stolen vehicle and felony evading. The female passenger was transported to a local hospital for her injuries.

Our sergeant was also transported to a local hospital for injuries he also received; thankfully however, he was also released a few hours later.

East Cypress Road was shut down for about 45 minutes while the scene was cleaned up. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) assisted us with the shut down and traffic control. At some point the CHP saw a driver attempting to go around all of the other stopped vehicles by driving on the shoulder of the road and through a cone pattern. This driver was stopped and determined to be driving while impaired- the driver was arrested for this offense.

DUI Arrest Made

In a separate incident on scene, CHP Officer Martinez-Mendoza noticed a vehicle driving within the field of a construction area. They made contact with the driver where they then performed a field sobriety check. The driver was arrested for suspected DUI.  The driver of the vehicle was not identified.
