Potential Levee Failure Could Occur on Victoria Island

Victoria Island

This week, San Joaquin County officials have signed an emergency declaration due to a possible levee failure on Victoria Island – between the City of Stockton and Town of Discovery Bay.

If the levee does fail, it could result in extensive damages to both agricultural lands and drinking water sources in the region. It could also impact access along Highway 4.

According to the officials, slumping along the Old River levee on Victoria Island was found on October 21 by Reclamation District engineers. In response, emergency measures were put in place such as temporary barriers.

“If this levee fails completely, it could impact over 6,000 acres of farmland,” said KSN’s Christopher Neudeck.

According to the San Joaquin County Office of Emergency Services: Community members living behind the levee on Victoria Island and in surrounding areas should do their part and prepare now to protect their homes and loved ones from potential levee failure.
