Board of Supervisors to Host Veterans Day Celebration

Martinez, CA – The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors will pay tribute to the Port Chicago sailors at this year’s Veterans Day celebration, recognizing the bravery and sacrifice of the sailors who stood against unsafe working conditions after the tragic 1944 Port Chicago Naval Magazine explosion in Concord.

The event will take place at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 5, in the Board Chambers, located at 1025 Escobar St., in Martinez.

The Port Chicago explosion, which claimed the lives of more than 320 servicemen, two-thirds of whom were Black, is a significant chapter in U.S. history. Following the disaster, 50 Black sailors were charged with mutiny for refusing to return to dangerous duties. Their exoneration by U.S. Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro, 80 years later, serves as a powerful reminder of the pursuit of justice.

Port Chicago Alliance Executive Director Yulie Padmore will be this year’s Keynote speaker. The event will also feature a color guard ceremony by the Pittsburg Police Department and a musical performance by Yesenia Roman who will be singing the Star-Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful. — more information
