Program Benefits and Structure
This program provides paid, part-time work experience (22.5 hours per week) at St. Vincent de Paul thrift stores or within SVdP’s trucking and transportation department. Participants receive training in retail operations, cash register use, inventory display, warehouse management, and more, helping them develop valuable skills for the job market.
St. Vincent de Paul’s Workforce Development Program is special because it provides not only skill-building but also a community of support. Participants are paired with mentors and attend weekly classes, where they build workplace and soft skills critical for career success. SVdP’s team of over 700 volunteers offers guidance and additional aid as needed.
Program Impact: Remi’s Story
For Remi, a graduate of the program, SVdP was a lifeline in a tough time. “I was in a difficult situation without a job or money, and my unemployment benefits had run out. When I found the SVdP Workforce Program, I not only found employment and training, but additional resources as well. I had dental issues, and the SVdP Free Dental Clinic helped me with them, allowing me to eat properly again,” Remi shared. “The program helped me open up and heal emotionally. I found a supportive community here.”
After completing the program, Remi found a job paying over $25 per hour. “Working at SVdP allowed me to develop new skills and, most importantly, helped me find fulfillment in helping others,” Remi added. “I loved working at the SVdP Thrift Store, especially when we could provide clothing to those in need.”
