The National Weather Service as issued a Tsunami warming that was triggered by an earthquake at 10:44 am just south of Eureka.

11:58 am UPDATE: The tsunami Warning is canceled for the coastal areas of California and Oregon. No tsunami danger presently exists for this area. This will be the final U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center message for this event

The National Weather Service also confirmed the warning was cancelled while the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services also announced the warning was cancelled.

According to preliminary information, the quake was initially reported as a 6.6 quake but then was upgraded by USGS.

Per the  @USGS:  Tsunami Warning in effect. A tsunami Warning is now in effect which includes the coastal areas of California and Oregon from Davenport, California (10 miles NW of Santa Cruz) to Douglas/Lane Line, Oregon (10 miles SW of Florence). – Event details: Preliminary magnitude 7.3 (Mwp) earthquake / Lat: 40.348, Lon: -124.733 at 2024-12-05T18:44:24 UTC Tsunami warnings mean that a tsunami with significant inundation is expected or occurring. Warnings indicate that widespread dangerous coastal flooding accompanied by powerful currents are possible and may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival.

 

BART: As of 11:30 am: Bay Area Rapid Transit announced that a tsunami warning has been issued for the Bay Area. Trains are being held out of the Transbay Tube. They are also clearing trains out of underground stations in San Francisco and on the Peninsula.

City of Berkeley: The City of Berkeley has issued an Evacuation Order due to a Tsunami coming to West Berkeley. EVACUATE NOW People in the Tsunami Zone are in IMMEDIATE DANGER and MUST EVACUATE NOW. Stay east of 7th St. This is a lawful order to leave now.  The Tsunami Zone includes these areas:

  • Berkeley Waterfront
  • Tom Bates Fields
  • West Frontage Road
  • I80 Freeway
  • Aquatic Park
  • Harrison, Gilman, Camelia, and Page, West of 5th St
  • Jones, Cedar, Virginia, and Delaware, West of 6th St
