Update — CHP says a 17-year-old was arrested after a crash killed one guard and injured another in the Town of Discovery Bay
Just before midnight, the California Highway Patrol responded to a vehicle versus guard shack that in the Town of Discovery Bay killing one person and injuring two others.
The crash occurred at Balfour Road at Bixler at 11:58 pm Friday where according to Chase Jeffrey of the CHP, a solo vehicle crashed into a guard shack in front of a gated community. A guard who was in the guard shack died while two other people were injured which were the driver of the vehicle (a solo occupant) and the other was a guard that was on duty.
“The second guard was in the guard shack, and he is deceased,” explained Jeffrey who said Contra Costa County Fire Protection District firefighters pronounced at scene.
The suspect driver was a juvenile (either 16 or 17 years old) and the car was registered in Discovery Bay in the Lake Shore area and its unknown where the driver was coming or going from.
The deceased was described as an older Hispanic male.
According to a Paul Singh, a witness, he said he heard the guard yelling, “stop, stop, stop, because he had seen a car coming towards them upon initial impact,” adding that the regular guards on duty were not working the shift.
The driver was taken to an area hospital where CHP will continue its investigation. Its also believed the driver was on a provisional license. Its unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
CHP UPDATE: JUVENILE ARRESTED FOLLOWING FATAL CRASH IN DISCOVERY BAY
DISCOVERY BAY, Calif. – A juvenile driver has been arrested following a fatal crash into an occupied security building that left one security guard dead and another with major injuries.
On December 6th, at approximately 11:58 PM, officers assigned to the California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Contra Costa Area office responded to a crash that was reported to have involved a vehicle that crashed into a building at the entrance of a gated community in Discovery Bay.
Our preliminary investigation indicates a gray Hyundai Santa Cruz, driven by a juvenile, was traveling eastbound on Balfour Road when, for reasons still under investigation, it ran off the roadway after crossing through the Bixler Road intersection. The vehicle then traveled over the raised divider island and collided with the security building which was occupied by two security guards.
Tragically, one guard sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The second guard sustained suspected major injuries and was transported to the hospital. The juvenile driver was also transported to the hospital for suspected minor injuries and was later arrested for vehicular manslaughter. An impaired driving investigation was also conducted, and DUI was ruled out as a factor in this crash.
