The Pittsburg Police Department says 1 person is dead following a vehicle crash while in a separate crash a drunk driver struck multiple police vehicles.
According to police, on Monday night, December 9th, at approximately 6:55 p.m., Pittsburg Police officers responded to a solo vehicle crash in the 1400 block of E. Leland Road. The vehicle struck a power pole and a fire hydrant, causing a fire that fully engulfed the car and resulted in a power outage in the area (Note – PG&E says 2,251 were without power).
Tragically, the driver, who was the sole occupant, did not survive the collision. The Pittsburg Police Department’s Traffic Division responded to investigate the incident. To preserve the scene and allow emergency personnel to work, both eastbound and westbound lanes of E. Leland Road were closed, and barricades along with highly visible patrol cars were placed to block the road.
DUI Driver Strikes Three Police Vehicles
At approximately 10:10 p.m., an unrelated black Ford Explorer traveling eastbound on E. Leland Road at a high rate of speed crashed through the barricades and struck three police vehicles positioned to block the road. The driver of the Ford Explorer was treated by medical personnel at the scene and later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The California Highway Patrol responded to investigate this secondary collision.
The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Pittsburg Police Department Dispatch at 925-646-2441 or Traffic Officer Barkley at 925-252-4005. The identity of the deceased driver is being withheld, and no further information will be released at this time.
