Rep. Kiley to Introduce Bill to Eliminate Federal Funding For California High-Speed Rail

High-Speed Rail

WASHINGTON – Today Representative Kevin Kiley (R-CA) announced plans to introduce a bill to eliminate federal funding for the failed California High-Speed Rail project.

The Department of Government Efficiency recently highlighted the project’s substantial delays and cost overruns, along with the $6.8 billion in federal funding it has received and the $8 billion in additional funding that has been requested. Kiley’s bill would make the project ineligible for any further federal funding.

Rep. Kiley previously supported the Transportation Appropriations Bill which includes funding to improve the condition of California roads and infrastructure while eliminating any more funds for the California high speed rail project.

California’s high-speed rail project has failed because of political ineptitude, and there is no plausible scenario where the cost to federal or state taxpayers can be justified,” Rep. Kiley said. “Our share of federal transportation funding should go towards real infrastructure needs, such as improving roads that rank among the worst in the country.”

Editors Notes:

In 2008, the original estimate was $33 billion for high-speed rail. Today, it is estimated at $135 billion. It was also estimated to be completed to have a system traveling from San Francisco to Los Angeles by 2028… but now its into the 2030’s, if not longer.

There is no such government entity as “DOGE” – its just a Trump advisory function. That said, Kiley is correct that CA HSR has been a boondoogle from day one. Thank you, Jerry Brown.

Elon wants to build coast to coast luxury EV high speed rail. Not sure where he plans to start with this but I love the idea. It would be nice to take a comfortable train to any state. Meanwhile, BART is planning a third trans-bay tube but because BART didn’t use standard track for its current system, it is apparently creating issues hooking it up with San Jose. BART should have used standard track as was recommended back in the 70’s.
