Contra Costa Animal Services at Max Capacity

The Contra Costa Animal Services announced its shelters were at max capacity and continue to seek forever homes for animals that enter the shelter.

Last week, they announced extended hours to help, however, for December 17, it’s the last day of the Bissell’s Holiday Hope Adoption Event! Adoption fees are sponsored by BISSELL Pet Foundation and Cathy Bissell.

According to Steve Burdo, Contra Costa County Animal Services spokesperson, there have been 2,070 adoptions year to date (1,283 dogs and 787 cats) with a total of 6,403 animals that have entered the shelter.

Unfortunately, 308 dogs and 746 cats have been euthanized in 2024 according to data provided by Burdo.

Contra Costa County Animal Services Adoption Update:

Virtual adoptions and in-person adoptions are now available. Meet and greets are available on a limited basis as volunteer staffing is available. You can call 925-608-8400 and have the Animal ID number ready for more information about our available pets.

Our staff and volunteers are standing by to provide additional information. They will respond to online applications in the order in which they are received, usually within 72 hours. There is no guarantee that the animal you apply for online will still be available by the time our adoption counselors are able to reach you.

All “Available” animals are eligible for adoption to the public only, and not eligible to transfer to a rescue, until 12:00pm the day after they are made “Available,” with the exception of pit bulls and kittens/puppies four (4) months and under.

Performance Reports

The monthly reports compare operational performance for Animal Services in various areas against our performance from the prior year.

*In December of 2020, CCAS updated our Live Release Rate (LRR) calculation to reflect the Asilomar model. The Asilomar LRR model is based on the calculation (Live Outcomes/Total Outcomes x 100%). The prior CCAS LRR calculation was based on (Total Live Outcomes/Total Live Intakes x 100%). This update was made to reflect the statistical reporting method most commonly used by animal shelters in the United States.
