Antioch: Man Sentenced to 8-Years in Prison in Crash that Killed 12-Year-Old

The Contra Costa County District Attorneys Office said Friday that a man who killed one child and injured two others in Antioch was sentenced to 8 years and 4 months in state prison.

According to the DA’s office, On December 19th, in the case of People v. Ray Shaqil Reeves, a court hearing was held to determine the appropriate term of imprisonment. The Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office recommended the maximum sentence of 9 years and 8 months in state prison, while the defense advocated for a 2-year sentence.

After weighing the relevant legal factors, Judge Charles Burch sentenced Ray Shaqil Reeves to 8 years and 4 months in state prison for killing a 12-year-old boy in the City of Antioch.

Deputy District Attorney Aron DeFerrari, who prosecuted the case said: “This is a profoundly sad incident. The impact of Mr. Reeves’ devastating actions cannot be described in words alone.”

On September 16, 2022, Reeves was driving recklessly at twice the speed limit on Sycamore Drive when he struck the boy and two other children, who were walking home from school. The collision severely injured the other two children.

ANTIOCH, CA — On October 11, 29-year-old Ray Shaqil Reeves was arrested and booked into the Martinez Detention Facility for vehicular manslaughter and 5 charges of assault with deadly weapon.

The charges stem from a Sept. 16 crash on Sycamore Drive where at 3:21 pm, Antioch Police and Contra Costa COunty Fire Protection District responded to a vehicle crash which resulted in three 12-year-old’s being struck by a vehicle.

All three were airlifted to area hospitals. 12-Year-Old Gianathon was taken off life support back on October 1 while two other teens are still recovering with multiple injuries.

According to police, Reeves was arrested for the following violations of the following California Penal Code Sections:

  • PC 192 (c)(1)-Vehicular Manslaughter,
  • PC 245(a)(1)-Assault with a Deadly Weapon
  • PC 245(a)(1)-Assault with a Deadly Weapon
  • PC 245(a)(1)-Assault with a Deadly Weapon
  • PC 245(a)(1)-Assault with a Deadly Weapon
  • PC 245(a)(1)-Assault with a Deadly Weapon

In a statement, Antioch Police said, ” Thank you to the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office for hearing this case and filing charges against Reeves. We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of the children and pray for the family and loved ones during this time of grief. Words fall short of expressing our sorrow for the victims of this extremely tragic incident”

Yesterday, Antioch Police Department issued a press release on the arrest of Ray Shaqil Reeves. Reeves, a 29-year-old resident of Antioch, will be arraigned today in Martinez at 1:30 pm in front of Judge Nancy Davis Stark.

On October 11th, the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office filed a vehicular manslaughter charge, five counts of assault with a deadly weapon, two special allegations for brain injury, paralysis, and great bodily harm against Reeves.

A total of six victims were harmed by Mr. Reeves’s actions on September 16th — four of whom are children. One child died from injuries caused by Reeves speeding through a residential neighborhood, colliding with another vehicle, and then hitting three children on a sidewalk as they were walking home from school.

The DA’s Office thanks Antioch Police for their thorough work in investigating this case. We also express our sympathies to the victims and condolences to the family who lost a loved one in this heartbreaking incident.

His charges stem from a crash that occurred on September 16, 2022 when Reeves was speeding through a residential neighborhood. He collided with a vehicle making a left turn at an intersection, and ended up driving on a sidewalk, hitting three middle school children who were walking home. All three minors are from a blended family and one died as a result of the crash. The two other minors are recovering from their physical injuries.

Nah…This is way too lenient. 8 yrs for taking an entire life (juvenile at that….had his entire life ahead of him) and severely injuring 2 other children is a bunch of crap. He should get life…just like the life he took.

I’m the mother of the boy that died. I can’t believe the sentence he got. It’s so infuriating to think that he will be able to walk free and my son lost his life because of his stupid actions. I love u Gbutt! #forever12 #GianathonMichael
