The Pinole Police Department announced the arrest of a Richmond man in connection with a Monday shooting that left a man wounded.
According to police, on Monday, December 9th , at approximately 7:40 PM, Pinole Police Dispatch received a report of a shooting that occurred on Interstate 80, and the involved vehicles exited the freeway, continued onto Appia Way, and stopped on Fitzgerald Drive. A short time later, Kaiser in Richmond reported a gunshot victim was in the emergency department and told medical staff he had been shot in Pinole.
Officers responded to the scene and determined from witness statements, the incident began as road rage on the eastbound I-80 Appian Way offramp. The incident continued onto Appian Way and ended on Fitzgerald Drive when one of the drivers shot a passenger inside the other vehicle. The victim’s girlfriend then drove the victim to Kaiser Richmond where he was treated for critical wounds and transferred to a trauma center in critical condition for treatment.
Pinole officers responded to the hospital and obtained additional details about the shooting. During the investigation, Pinole detectives discovered the shooting had been captured on local surveillance cameras. They used the footage to identify the suspect vehicle and shared it with other law enforcement agencies.
On Tuesday, December 10th, at approximately 1:45 AM, Richmond police officers located the suspect vehicle and suspect in the City of Richmond, and the suspect was safely taken into custody. Pinole officers responded to Richmond and took custody of the suspect
The suspect was interviewed and provided a statement consistent with witness statements. The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Otis Keller out of Richmond, was arrested and booked at the Martinez Detention Facility on attempted murder (PC 664/187).
Pinole detectives continued the investigation, obtaining and executing a search warrant on Thursday, December 12th , at the suspect’s home where they located evidence of the crime and seized several firearms. Pinole detectives presented the case to the Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office for review and Keller has been charged with shooting at an occupied vehicle (PC 246), personal and intentional discharge of a firearm resulting in great bodily injury (PC 12022.53(d)), and possession of an assault weapon (PC 30605(a)). Keller’s bail was set at $1.25 million and he remains in-custody
The victim, a 24-year-old male out of Richmond, is in stable condition and remains hospitalized. The investigation is ongoing and additional weapons charges are being considered
