Sherman Island Proclaimed “Local Emergency” in Sacramento County

Last week, the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors alerted the state to a “significant uncontrolled levee erosion” near Sherman Island.

Here is the release:

The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors has ratified a Proclamation of Emergency in response to significant uncontrolled levee erosion within the Sherman Island area in south Sacramento County.
The proclamation is part of a process to alert the State to the issue and the needs of the Reclamation District to repair the levee.
The levee problem was first discovered by engineers for Reclamation District 341 on Dec. 14. An inspection of the levee that day uncovered erosion damage. The damage, which was measured at 500 yards, was caused by what is known as Wave Wash from a recent December storm which battered the levee with high river water, strong tidal influence and winds in excess of 40 miles per hour.
The storm’s impact caused erosion on the water side of the levee along the Sacramento River. The damage is near the Sacramento County and Solano County lines. While the threat of levee failure is low, because the island is inhabited by approximately 200 residents and holds critical infrastructure, Sacramento County Office of Emergency Services (Sac OES) is partnering with numerous agencies through the Emergency Operation Center to establish specific response plans if conditions worsen. Reclamation District 341 engineers are conducting daily inspections and taking measurements of the levee at regular intervals, keeping Sac OES and partners informed of any changes.
To assist with the emergency work on Sherman Island, the Sacramento County Department of Regional Parks has closed Sherman Island County Park.  The park is being offered to the reclamation district to stage materials for the engineers.  The County requests visitors avoid going to Sherman Island until the park reopens.
Sac OES is working closely with Reclamation District 341 and State partners to identify and implement repairs to the levee.
The County has not issued an evacuation notice, but residents are always advised to follow Sacramento County News, sign up to receive alerts and warnings through Sacramento-Alert, and follow updates from the National Weather Service.
Residents living on Sherman Island or visitors and workers to the area are encouraged to sign up for notification through www.sacramento-alert.org or text “levee” to 77295.
