Antioch: Student Arrested With Firearm on Deer Valley High School Campus

by CC News
Arrest

A student was arrested by law enforcement Wednesday on Deer Valley High School campus who was armed with a firearm.

No details have been released by Antioch Police, the sheriffs department, or the school district, however, a message had been sent out by Deer Valley High School Principal Veronica McLennan to staff.

Here is a copy of the message:

“Good morning Wolverine Staff,

This morning the sheriffs department arrested a student in class, because of an investigation for activities that took place off campus. During the arrest, students in the class witness the student in question attempt to run. The student was quickly taken to the ground and detained by several officers. When the student was searched, he was found to be in possession of a firearm. The student was arrested without further incident. I am working with the district office to ensure the students and teacher that witnessed the event have access to socioemotional support to process the incident. In addition, this is a mandatory expulsion, and we are taking immediate steps per Ed Code and board policy to ensure the safety of students and staff. I will hold a voluntary meeting directly after school in the library to review any questions/concerns you may have.

Sincerely,
Veronica

No other information was released by the Antioch Unified School District, sheriffs office or Antioch Police.

10:45 am UPDATE

In a revised message, Superintendnet Rob Martinez issued the following message that would be going out to parents later in the day.

“Good Morning DVHS Families,

This morning at 8:30 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office came to our campus to detain a student under investigation for alleged criminal activity unrelated to the school. During the detention, a search of the student’s backpack revealed a firearm in their possession. The student was immediately arrested and removed from campus. We can confirm that there are no continued threats.

I want to assure you that the safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority. At no time were students or staff in danger during this incident. Possession of a firearm on school grounds is a serious violation of both Education Code and state law, resulting in mandatory expulsion proceedings.

We are grateful to law enforcement for their swift and decisive actions in ensuring the safety of our school community.

To support any students or staff impacted by this incident, our counseling team is available with a range of resources to address social-emotional needs. If your student would like to speak with a counselor, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school office at (925) 779-7570.

Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our school safe.

Sincerely,

Veronica McLennan
Principal”

11:19 am UPDATE
Contra Costa County District Attorney’s office confirmed the arrest and said the student was a 17-year-old male.

So the student gets expelled. Does the student end up in another high school in the district?

This kid will be back in class today. We have a week criminal system and even weaker district attorney.

As a parent of a student at this school, this kid should not be allowed back on school grounds for any reason. I believe he just gave up his right for a public school education. At some point if he so chooses he can pursue a GED.
There was a reason he chose to bring that firearm to school, lets not give him an opportunity to fulfill those reasons, lets keep our kids safe by all means available. Mandatory expulsion means just that, permanent removal of this student from this and all other public schools.

In that ‘revised’ letter, the last part of the second paragraph claims at no time was anyone in danger. How can that possibly be true when there’s a weapon at school.
