Bill Would Ban Biological Males from Competing in Girls Sports

On Monday, California Assemblywoman Kate Sanchez (R-Trabuco Canyon) says she will be challenging a bill that allows transgender athletes to participate in girls’ sports.

I’m hitting the ground running on day one of session by introducing the Protect Girls’ Sports Act. This bill will restore fair and safe conditions for girls’ sports by preventing biological males from competing,” said Sanchez.

Sanchez’s bill is a direct challenge to AB 1266, signed in 2013 by Governor Jerry Brown which says “a pupil be permitted to participate in sex-segregated school programs and activities, including athletic teams and competitions, and use facilities consistent with his or her gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on the pupil’s records.”

With Democrats holding a super majority, its unclear just how far the bill will move through the legislative process, however, it will continue the debate over biological males competing in women’s sports.

Sanchez released the following statement regarding AB 89:

“Women’s sports have long been a symbol of dedication, perseverance, dedication, and opportunity. As a former high school athlete, I know this is a space where young women can compete fairly, achieve their dreams, and showcase their talents.

But today, that fairness is being stripped away. When biological men are allowed to compete with women in women’s sports, it creates an unfair playing field.

Young women who had spent years training, sacrificing and earning their place to compete at the highest level are now being forced to compete against individuals with undeniable biological advantages. It’s not just unfair. It’s disheartening and dangerous.

For girls, this is about more than competition. It’s about safety. Whether in contact sports, locker rooms, or shared spaces, these policies place our daughters at risk. We cannot ignore the physical and emotional toll that this takes. I will always advocate for fairness, opportunity, and protection of women and girls in sports. It’s time to restore integrity back to women’s athletics and ensure that every young woman has a fair and safe chance to compete”

According to the Bill:

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL’S DIGEST

AB 89, as introduced, Sanchez. Interscholastic sports: gender equity.
Existing law recognizes the California Interscholastic Federation (”CIF”) to be a voluntary organization that consists of school and school-related personnel with responsibility for administering interscholastic athletic activities in secondary schools. Existing law requires the CIF to report, as provided, to the appropriate policy committees of the Legislature and the Governor on its goals and objectives with regard to, and the status of, among other things, gender equity in interscholastic athletics, including, but not limited to, the number of male and female pupils participating in interscholastic athletics in secondary schools, and actions it has taken in order to ensure compliance with Title IX of the federal Education Amendments of 1972.
This bill would require the CIF to amend its constitution, bylaws, and policies to prohibit a pupil whose sex was assigned male at birth from participating on a girls’ interscholastic sports team.
