Antioch Unified Names Matt Wayne as Interim Superintendent

by CC News

On Friday, the Antioch Unified School District announced embattled former San Francisco Unified School District Superintendent Matt Wayne will serve as interim superintendent.

Reporting out of closed session, Board President Antonio Hernandez announced the hiring of Wayne in a 4-1 vote with Dr. Jag Lathan being the dissenting vote. No other details of the hire were provided such as salary or terms.

Wayne, who resigned from SFUSD in October 2024, will replace interim superintendent Robert Martinez.

Under Wayne, the SFUSD was looking to close schools in the 2025-26 school year, however, that was placed on hold after the district announced Dr. Marie SU was named as superintendent. Former Mayor London Breed was critical of Wayne with the planned closer/merger of 11 schools.

Prior to going to SFUSD, Wayne was superintendent at Hayward Unified School District, where he served since 20217.

Back in September 2024, Antioch School Board Amended its contract with acting Superintendent Robert Martinez. He has been serving as acting superintendent after the Board agreed to a separation with former superintendent Stephanie Anello–she had been with Antioch Unified for 25-years, including 8 years as superintendent.

UPDATE
At its January 29 meeting, the Board of Trustees will be asked to review and approve the Interim Superintendent Employee Agreement with Matt Wayne. – see agenda.

Resignation: Message from Dr. Wayne to SFUSD Community

I am writing to share the difficult decision to leave the San Francisco Unified School District as of October 18, 2024. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have served SFUSD and proud of all that has been accomplished during my almost two-and-a-half years leading the District.

I am an educator first and foremost. During the last two years under my leadership, the District has established clear outcomes for student learning, implemented districtwide standards-based assessments, adopted a new literacy curriculum, expanded instructional coaching to all elementary schools, is piloting a new math curriculum, now offers Algebra in the 8th grade, and has expanded career pathway opportunities, reduced chronic absenteeism and increased early literacy rates, particularly for African-American and Pacific Islander students.

With a new Board of Education being seated soon as well as our ongoing significant fiscal issues, I believe the time is right for new leadership in the District. From day one, every decision I have made has been to benefit the students, families, and staff of SFUSD, including this one. I appreciate the opportunity to have served this community during such challenging times. — full statement
