The following Letter to the Editor was submitted by Art Ray in remembrance of Dennis Richmond who KTVU announced has passed away.
Dear Editor:
Thursday August 2, 2007
I walked into the newsroom at KTVU in Oakland to drop off some news video to the assignment desk.
To my left of the assignment desk was the desk that Dennis Richmond prepares his newscast from, before going live on the evening broadcast.
We made eye contact and Dennis said hey Art did you hear what happened to Chauncey Bailey?
“He got gunned down earlier in Oakland”.
Dennis knew that Chauncey and I were in the process of starting a new entertainment cable tv station on Comcast to replace the old Soul Beat.
That was the last time that I interacted with Dennis prior to his retirement from KTVU.
At that time there were two African American journalists in the Bay Area that I appreciated for their professionalism in journalism.
Dennis Richmond was one and KTVU photojournalist Bill Moore was the other.
For years Bay Area Brothers and Sisters were proud to turn on the KTVU evening news and see a Black man anchoring the broadcast at a major Bay Area news TV station
Brother Dennis rest in heaven
31 years covering the news you did your thang.
You made us all proud.
Art Ray, Pittsburg
