On Tuesday, Antioch Mayor Ron Bernal reported that it could be another 4 years before the Contra Loma Swim Lagoon at Contra Loma Regional Park reopens

During the Antioch council meeting, Bernal shared that at the mayors conference, the East Bay Regional Park District made a presentation where Board Member Colin Coffey said they were working on a plan for the swimming pool at Contra Loma Park.

“That is something that has been out of commission for a couple years now, and it looks like it will be another 3 or 4 years, but I asked him to please expedite that project,” said Bernal. “It looks like they have to redesign that whole structure.”

The lagoon has been closed since the 2022 swim season citing it was closed for required maintenance and safety repairs. Staff said in September before it closed, it averaged between 60,000 to 100,000 people annually.

Editors Note

Back at its September 4, 2024 meeting, the EBRPD provide an update of the swim lagoon repair project. Staff provided cost estimates of a total of four options which ranged between $10.6 million to $14.51 million (noting there is no funding at this point in time).

The lagoon was built in 2003 by the Contra Costa Water District to replace lake swimming while making the EBRPD responsible for operation and maintenance of the lagoon. It was stated during the presentation there were several existing condition deficiencies:

  • ADA Accessibility
  • Lagoon Water Clarity and Quality: sand worn and visibility issues for lifeguards
  • Chemical Storage Expansion: chemical separations required
  • Pump Replacement: structure deterioration resulting in water leaks
  • Multiple expansion joints that leak over time
  • Plaster finish, mastic joints limited life (1-3 years)

Current progress:

  • Awarded contract to Aquatic Design Group that assembled a comprehensive design team
  • Conducted in-depth site analysis
  • Completed Geotechnical Study and Report
  • Drafted two (2) Concept Designs for internal review and comment

EBRPD is looking at two concepts

Concept A

  • Existing Restroom Footprint
  • Equipment Overhaul
  • Accessibility and Egress Compliance
  • Shade Structures
  • Base Options show enhanced plaster finish

Concept B

  • Modified Restroom Footprint
  • Equipment Overhaul
  • Enhanced Accessibility and Egress Compliance
  • Shade Structures
  • Kiosk Entry Space
  • Terraced Seating
  • Enhanced Plaster Finis
