The California Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that occurred in Alamo on Thursday after a wheel came detached from a vehicle and crossed over the freeway into oncoming traffic and struck a vehicle.
From CHP:
ALAMO, Calif. – A detached wheel from a northbound vehicle strikes a southbound vehicle resulting in one fatality. On April 17th, at approximately, 1:35 p.m., officers assigned to the California Highway Patrol’s (CHP) Contra Costa Area office responded to a vehicle vs wheel crash which occurred on southbound I-680, just south of Stone Valley Road near Alamo.
Our preliminary investigation indicates a Ford Van was traveling on I-680 northbound, just south of Stone Valley Road, when, for reasons still under investigation, its left rear wheel became detached. The wheel continued traveling north when it crossed over the concrete center divider, and struck a Toyota Tundra traveling on the opposite side of I-680. Tragically, the driver of the Toyota sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene.
The driver of the Ford remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
Portions of both northbound and southbound lanes of I-680 were closed at separate times for on-scene investigation. The southbound slow lane was closed upon CHP arrival and was reopened at approximately 3:24 p.m. The two left northbound lanes were closed at approximately 3:30 p.m. And were re-opened at approximately 4:21 p.m.
This crash remains under investigation. If anyone witnessed the incident or the events leading up to it, please contact Contra Costa Area office in Martinez at (925) 646-4980 or email your contact information to [email protected] to be contacted by the investigating officer.
