Steve Hilton Announces Candidacy for California Governor

On Monday, Steve Hilton made it official after announcing he has entered the race to become the next governor of the State of California.

According to his website, he moved to the Bay Area a decade ago to raise his family and has taught at Stanford, started a business, written books and hosted a TV show. He says his parents were immigrants – they fled communism in Hungry to start a new life in England. He graduated college from New College at Oxford and got a job with the Conservative Party when Mrs. Thatcher was Prime Minister. He became an advisor for former British Prime Minister David Cameron, who was leader of the Conservative Party.

In 2012, he moved to California. He hosted a TV show — The Next Revolution with Steve Hilton — and podcasts: California Rebel Base, The Steve Hilton Show, Big Ideas Book Club. Through my policy organization, Golden Together, I’ve set out the changes we need to make to get this state back on track.

Vision for California:

  • Reduce taxes for workers and end the bureaucratic war on business
  • Restore the California Dream of a single family home for every family
  • Ensure that 100% of students meet state math and English standards

California has a completely unaffordable cost of living, driven by the highest taxes in America and the highest prices for housing, rent, electricity, and water. As governor my priority will be to help working people by reducing their taxes:

  • No tax on income under $100K
  • 7.5% flat tax on earnings over $100k
  • No increase in property taxes. Protect Prop.13!

He added that businesses are under assault from the government. Endless different agencies attacking them non-stop with rules, inspections, fees, charges, insane processes that cost a fortune and can take years to complete.

His priorities will be to:

  • Sunset our regulatory code, so regulations go away unless explicitly renewed. Idaho did this and managed to reduce regulation by 95%.
  • Reduce and simplify California’s administrative state, so we eliminate bureaucratic bloat and duplication of functions.
  • Introduce regulatory budgets, so state agencies remove existing regulations before introducing new ones.
  • Require ‘permit paybacks’, so agencies that don’t handle permits in a timely manner have to refund their fees.
  • Bring change at the top, so the people running government agencies aren’t beholden to special interests and don’t believe the solution to almost every problem is more regulation.
