About Delta Advocacy Foundation
From the ashes of tragedy came an organization developed to support the charitable and educational needs of our community.
In 1988, local chiropractor, Dr. Lowell Frigard, reached out to Jack Roddy, a local businessman, after learning about a family who had been devastated by loss. It was a cold day for the family with three small children and no food or heat. This businessman, out of the kindness of his heart, took firewood from his personal supply, meat from his freezer and donated it to this family in need. That act of kindness was the birth of the Delta Advocacy Foundation.
The next year, Reverend Roger Kuehn contacted other prominent business members of the community, Leo Fontana and Bob Smith, and talked about how there was no organization in Antioch prepared to do this kind of work on a larger scale. As good leaders, they began talking to other members of our East Contra Costa County community, such as Greg Feere, Gordon Gravelle, Les Bedford, Jimmy Bean, Marion Horna, and Nancy Green, about these ideas and developed the organization that we know today.
$500 given by California Delta Newspapers in January 1989 was the start of donations. During the first 25 years of our existence, we thrived on our ability to raise funds through a Family Fun Fair and later a dinner and auction fundraiser held every year. During those fundraisers we explained our mission and began to characterize Delta Advocacy Foundation as the Red Cross without the red tape. We found great pride in being able to quickly produce the needed funds and materials to support our community, many times providing support in under 24 hours. We are now able to add college scholarships for graduating seniors to the many different high schools in East County as well as emergency donations to families in need. Our community has blessed us with the opportunity to provide support in excess of $500,000 over our existence. Referrals for assistance come from school district personnel who interact with children, clergy who work with families, food closets, and community leaders who look to Delta Advocacy Foundation for help with situational emergency funding.
We are now writing a new chapter in the history of Delta Advocacy Foundation and look forward to continuing to support our community. The current members of this organization are dedicated volunteers. We continue to seek ways to assist our community and provide college scholarships. We THANK YOU for your interest and support!
