On Friday, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District was dispatched to a report of a vegetation fire in a field behind Grapenut Ct. in the City of Antioch.
According to firefighters, they arrived on scene reporting a 1/2 acre vegetation fire near a homeless encampment behind Viera Avenue at Brazil Drive and near the PG&E property. The fire also had multiple vehicles on fire along with drebis in the area. Firefighters were able to gain control of the fire and prevent it from spreading and limiting it to under 1-acre in size. In the area around the blaze, were more than 150 tires, some new, along with multiple encampments and vehicles people were living in.
Antioch Police Department was also requested to the scene along with the fire investigator.
Several residents in the area have said they have vehicles driving along the dirt roads all throughout the night while also looking in backyards and into homes with flashlights–sometimes aggressive in nature. They have asked the City of Antioch for help, however, response from the city has not netted any results. Over the years, fire crews respond to this field multiple times for vegetation fires and other fire incidents. Multiple stolen vehicles are also located on this property.
