Antioch, CA — James East of Oakley scored the 25 lap Main Event victory for the Pacific Coast Hobby Stocks Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. The win will put him into the point lead and was his his first Hobby Stock win at Antioch. He picked up the victory at Petaluma a week earlier.
East and Pittsburg’s James Thomson exchanged the lead multiple times in the first five laps with East making a low pass in Turn 4 of the fifth lap to grab the lead from Thomson. Point leader Grayson Baca of Brentwood was an early third, and East began to pull away from the pack. East caught slower traffic by Lap 12, but a yellow flag waved on Lap 14 for Larry McKinzie Jr of Discovery Bay in Turn 4. East picked the inside on the restart, but Thomson raced past him for the lead.
Baca was involved in a Turn 4 mishap on Lap 16 to fall from third, and Thomson led East and Todd Gomez of Antioch on the restart. Jewell Crandall of Antioch was looking for a way around Gomez and made her move for third on Lap 23. The lead duo was going side by side during the final two laps with East making a high pass in Turn 2 of the final lap to grab the lead for good. East brought it home to victory ahead of Thomson, Crandall, Charlie Bryant of Oakley and Pittsburg’s Jared Baugh.
Bob Newberry of Brentwood won the 20 lap Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event. This was the second-straight win for the current point leader.
Kevin Box of Discovery Bay set the early pace ahead of Newberry and Steve Maionchi of Sonora. Ryan Siverling of Concord made a low pass in Turn 1 of the third lap to gain third, and Chris Geilfuss of Antioch brought out a yellow flag on the fourth lap. Box continued to lead Newberry on the restart, but an inside pass on the frontstretch on Lap 6 gained Newberry the lead. Newberry began to pull away from the pack, leaving a good battle between Box and Siverling for second.
During the final eight laps, Newberry caught a trio of slower cars and seemed content to run behind them. However, second and third were closing in on him, forcing Newberry to make a move. After Newberry lapped Geilfuss, Geilfuss spun in Turn 2 for a Lap 18 yellow flag. This eliminated the traffic problem in front of Newberry, and he led the final two laps to win ahead of Box and Siverling. Siverling didn’t report to tech, moving Shannon Newton of Elk Grove into third ahead of MacKenzie Newton and Maionchi.
Sean Catucci of Brentwood won the 20 lap Dwarf Car Main Event. This was the third win of the season for the current point leader.
Catucci led from the outset ahead of Brandon Aylesworth of Suisun City and John Durden of San Juan Bautista. Rookie David Hays got out of shape exiting Turn 2 and fell further back in fifth, but he would make a low pass in Turn 4 to take fourth from Travis Day of Concord on Lap 5. A yellow flag waved on Lap 8 when Aylsworth spun from second in Turn 4.
Catucci continued to lead Durden and Hays on the restart. Hays was challenging Durden for the second spot when Durden spun on the backstretch on Lap 12 for the final yellow flag. Catucci led Hays and Day on the restart, but Aylesworth slipped past Day for third on Lap 16. Catucci set a rapid pace and won by a straightaway ahead of Hays, Aylesworth and Day.
Mike Learn of Petaluma won the 20 lap Super Stock Main Event. This was the second win of the season for Learn in Antioch and his fifth of the year as he has three victories at Petaluma Speedway.
In search of his 80th career Antioch Speedway victory, Brentwood’s Fred Ryland set the early pace ahead of Learn and Scott Foster of Oakley, who was getting laps in his IMCA Stock Car. Foster went side by side for several laps with Paul Hanley of Emerald Hills. Ryland and Learn set a rapid pace and soon caught the back of the pack. As they were attempting to put a lap on one of the drivers, Ryland went high, and the car drifted into his path, allowing Learn to make an inside pass in Turn 4 for the lead on Lap 13. Learn pulled away from there to win with Ryland settling for second head of Hanley, Bill Lage of Petaluma and Foster.
Joel Hannagan of San Jose won the 15 lap Hardtop Main Event. This was the first Antioch win of the season for the reigning champion and the 20th of his Antioch Hardtop career. He also won a few days earlier in the Sportsman Main Event during the Merced County Fair.
After winning the heat race earlier, Hannagan jumped into the Main Event lead at the outset and set a good pace in leading every lap of the non-stop event for the victory. Don Slaney of Martinez matched his season opening effort with another second, and Joe Shenefield of Roseville rebounded from his rollover in the season opener to finish third.
Racing resumes next Saturday night with the annual Fan Appreciation Night. This will be a $5 admittance for the fans. The IMCA sanctioned Modifieds, Sport Modifieds and Stock Cars return along with the Pacific Coast Hobby Stocks and the Tri State Pro Stock Challenge Series.
